May 15th marks the birthdate of one of our favorite DJs - Roy Thode. Technically masterful, pioneering some of the most progressive methods in DJing whilst manifesting an exceptionally educated and tasteful selection of music, Roy Thode is truly an artist when it comes to the craft of DJing. Personally, as DJs, we've learned so much from listening to Roy Thode, 40 years later he continues to inspire us in such relevant ways. 

Roy Thode, a native New Yorker from Long Island, moved to the city in his early 20’s after establishing his DJ skills as a young man growing up in Wantaugh. Roy was perhaps best known for being the DJ for “Saturday Nights at the Ice Palace” in Cherry Grove. His NYC DJ career was highlighted with residencies at both Studio 54 and The Saint however it was the Long Island Gay club scene that fueled and created the foundation for Roy’s illustrious career as perhaps one of the best technical DJ’s of his era.

This mix was recorded at the Ice Palace - in many ways, his home. Being able to share this previously unreleased mix is a tremendous honor for us and we hope you can appreciate this as much as we do. A huge thank you to Marsha Stern for working with us and making this little project a reality.

DJ Earl Grey aka Nik Thorup takes us beyond the dancefloor and into the realm of the cerebral. During his month-long residency at Waxflower, Nik spun a cornucopia of captivating and unique records that always left us hungry for more.

We’re still not sure how Nik managed to intertwine so many polarising genres so effortlessly. Few DJs can stroll from ambient to jazz, from folk to dub, making it sound so organic. Maybe there’s a link to be drawn between this kind of musical curation and some of the more adventurous wine-making processes we’ve come to love at Waxflower. Skin-contact wine often leads to bolder, more intense, and less predictable palates. 

Shady wine-making comparisons aside, it was an honour for us to have Nik play for the whole month. We’ve spent plenty of time listening to his recorded sets, so it was a treat to experience his talent live at Waxflower.

Tina Marie is a multidisciplinary creative with roots in Cameroon and Madagascar. She was raised in Canada, and currently resides in Zurich, Switzerland. She flows through music genres like she does with her soul projects, blurring boundaries with surprising twists—composing a colorful selection of sounds.

Tina Marie first started playing at Kasheme in 2021 with roots digging deep into old school hip hop and soul & jazz. Over the years she’s blossomed and continues to grow and explore other genres — from  Afro-funk to disco and everything in between. Inspired by fellow Cameroonian legends — Manu Dibango and Francis Bebey, she pays tribute to her roots sprinkled throughout her eclectic sets.

As a resident on Planet Kasheme, she takes her listeners on a musical journey through space and time, using her emotions as inspiration to provoke her listeners to connect deeper with the music, and more importantly, with themselves. Music therefore becomes a form of meditation and a medium for self discovery.
