Three pieces for string quartet performed by the Quatuor Bozzini on the 5th Feb 2016 at the Woodend Barn, Banchory Scotland. Recording engineer Nicolas Godmaire.

The concert concluded the second week of work in the Composer's Kitchen, following part one in Montreal in June 2016. The project has been fantastic and I'm very grateful to the Quatuor Bozzini, Sound and Music, Sound Scotland, Christopher Butterfield, Christopher Fox, Egidija Medeksaite, Kyle Brenders, James O'Callaghan, Nicole Rochman, Nicolas Godmaire and everyone else who contributed to making it happen.

High and radiant is the moon. I blew out my lamp, and thousands of thoughts rise up from the bottom of my heart. My eyes overflow with tears.

Paul Klee created a text-painting using these words a hundred years ago, the year he was conscripted into, though never fought for, the German army. I saw this painting just days after the UK voted to leave the European Union. I was touched by it’s simple, fragile vulnerability made at a deeply fractured time.

“What we really want to do is serve happiness” is the first sentence of a lecture written by the artist Agnes Martin in Santa Fe, New Mexico, 1979. The title of the lecture was The Current of the River of Life Moves Us.
