Taken by images, carried off on a melody

Steve

Conversations my 20-something self could have had in the 1980s, if I had met my 65 year old self. 

Scene 1 , protagonists are Dave (me, in my 20s), and Ted, my 65 year old self. Set in a pub in central London in the first half of the 1980s. The pub is busy so Dave takes the only spare chair on a small table for two. Within a minute Ted walks in, gets himself a pint and takes the last free seat opposite Dave. With no mobile phone to bury himself in, Dave momentarily catches Ted's eye who needs no further encouragement to start a conversation.

Ted says “It’s just started raining, could be worse at least it's in warm here
You're looking lost, what's up son at least you've got a beer"
"I ran from home" says Dave "found a job, I know I should be pleased
But the thought of doing it forever brings me to my knees"

"Mate you're only young, just starting out, don’t worry your head
Things will get much better, trust me, think positive instead
You could waste a lifetime fretting, on ifs and might have beens 
Then look back when you’re sixty-five and realise you're running out of steam"

"I split up with my girlfriend, and  it's true it’d run its course
And now I'm drinking more Ted, and I know it's getting worse
Stuck in a rut, there's no way out, I'm wasting all my youth"
"Dave get a grip, don't give me that crap, it’s time to learn some hard truths "

Ted says "Believe what your parents say, listen to me too
Before you know it you'll be looking back and wondering how time flew.
I'm old Dave, I'm aching, but I made the most of what I was given
I was once like you now open your eyes, stop moping and go start living"

Dave makes all the right noises, his excuses and is gone 
Ted shakes his head, “what's with these young guys, they don't know they're born”
Heading to the Rose & Crown, Dave fancies a pint or two, or three, or four 
“That old guy Ted was nice enough but he didn't have a clue”
