rhein has derived from the electronic project fern by Jürgen Krause (Düsseldorf) and Johannes
Rix (Cologne), that in 2006 attracted the attention of critics and public with the release of their
album „This First Day“ on Autoplate.
The duo turned into a trio, when guitarist Peter Witt (Düsseldorf) joined the project. Their new
name refers to the river which is both homeland and inspiration. In a threesome they went
searching for fresh sounds and spheres and now present the findings of their sound experiments
with their new album.
rhein developed under the influence of German music traditions including the Düsseldorf as well
as the Berlin school of (electronic) music. rhein continue these traditions and recombine them in
terms of deceleration and enhancement. They take you on a journey through time and space:
Time is stretched to create tension and morphed into wide filigree sound spaces that flow like a
river.

My name is David Balster, I´m an artist from Düsseldorf in Germany. I do electronic music since 1995 starting with an awful keyboard and two tapedecks. my first program was rebirth and I liked it alot. (I still have an old MD with 3 nice tracks from that acid-house period of mine). Then I discovered www.buzzmachines.com where you can download a free software music studio called buzz, and that´s where it all started to get experimental.
I´m influenced by a variety of music, like psychedelic rock, classic, breakcore, metal, asian folk, anything, one cannot cutdown to a specific genre. It´s more about emotions. If a musical structure evokes something in me, it´s good, no matter, where it comes from.

Rhine – the river that connects both cities, we live in.

The kilometers between the cathedral city of Cologne and the oldtown of Dusseldorf are a kind of  Mississippi delta in the history of electronic music – branched, stimulating, fertile.

So listen to new sounds,  inspired by the flow of the river – and influenced not only by the vivid electronic music scene in both cities, but also by global cosmic music.
