The Third Pillar

	1.	The opening Surah of the Qur’an — Al-Fātiḥah

– A recap of the first two pillars.
– The third pillar: recitation of Surah Al-Fātiḥah.
– Shaykh Muhammad Amān al-Jāmī’s explanation:
– The issue of blameworthy taqlīd (blind-following).
– Key Arabic terminologies used in the explanation of the third pillar.
– Are those being led in prayer required to recite Surah Al-Fātiḥah?
– “There is no prayer for the one who does not recite Surah Al-Fātiḥah.” (Hadith)
– Reciting Surah Al-Fātiḥah applies to everyone — the one being led (ma’mūm) and the one praying individually (munfarid).
– Therefore, one should recite Surah Al-Fātiḥah even when following the Imām.
– The narration regarding remaining silent during the Imām’s recitation, with the exception of reciting Surah Al-Fātiḥah.
– Further evidences supporting the obligation of reciting Surah Al-Fātiḥah.
– The problem of strictly following a madhhab when it clearly opposes authentic narrations from the noble Messenger ﷺ.
– Are we obligated to follow a madhhab?
– Example of some of the Tābiʿ al-Tābiʿīn with Imām Mālik.
– Strictly following a madhhab or an Imām is not from the obligatory knowledge that one will be questioned about in the grave.
– Imām Abū Ḥanīfah’s clear stance regarding following his madhhab.
– Reciting Surah Al-Fātiḥah in all instances of the prayer was the consensus (ijmāʿ) of the companions رضي الله عنهم أجمعين.

Shaykh ʿAbdul Muḥsin’s explanation:

– Reciting the Basmalah — seeking blessing and assistance from Allah تعالى for the recitation.
– The Basmalah is recited silently, even though it is an āyah from the Qur’an.
– Is the Basmalah considered part of Surah Al-Fātiḥah?
– Surah Al-Fātiḥah consists of seven verses

DROP THE EYES: The Danger of Letting the Eyes Roam Freely

The khuṭbah at Masjid al-Furqān (TROID) on 2022.07.15 that preceded the 2022 summer conference entitled: Singling Out the Truth Amidst a Sea of Falsehood. Shaykh Kāshiff Khān mentions numerous ayāt and ḥadīth about the blessing of following the Sunnah and clinging to it amidst a sea of misguidance. 

Narrated Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "You will follow the ways of those nations who were before you, span by span and cubit by cubit (i.e., inch by inch) so much so that even if they entered a hole of a mastigure, you would follow them." We said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! (Do you mean) the Jews and the Christians?" He said, "Whom else?" Saḥiḥ al-Bukhārī 7320

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عُمَرَ الصَّنْعَانِيُّ ـ مِنَ الْيَمَنِ ـ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏"‏ لَتَتْبَعُنَّ سَنَنَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ شِبْرًا شِبْرًا وَذِرَاعًا بِذِرَاعٍ، حَتَّى لَوْ دَخَلُوا جُحْرَ ضَبٍّ تَبِعْتُمُوهُمْ ‏"‏‏.‏ قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ الْيَهُودُ وَالنَّصَارَى قَالَ ‏"‏ فَمَنْ ‏"‏‏.‏
