Today we welcome another friend of the series for a podcast debut! Koot (full name Sander Koot) is a DJ from our hometown of Utrecht. Not for long though, as he will be moving to Rotterdam next week.

He has been in love with clubbing and techno for a very long time, but he is relatively new to DJ'ing himself. As clubs were closed during the pandemic, he decided to express his love for techno by picking up a mixer and some turntables in december 2020. Teaching himself how to beatmatch as a vinyl-only DJ took many, many hours but he enjoyed every minute of it! 

Koot recently upgraded his setup to include two digital players, which he uses alongside his beloved vinyl collection. After upgrading to a multi-deck setup, he started practicing with three decks at once to try and reproduce the heavy, layered techno experience that he loves to hear in the club. As you may be able to tell by the tracks used in this mix, Koot takes inspiration from DJ's/Producers such as Nørbak, Lewis Fautzi, Reeko, Tensal/Kessell (Exium) and off course Oscar Mulero (the cat chilling in the background of his picture is called Mulero actually). 

Appreciate this fine mixing on 3 decks flawlessly mixing vinyl and digital tracks into a dark, deep yet energising mix!

Sacha Treasure known as “Mikrotakt” is a UK native who grew up in the deep forest of Sweden. This raw groove dealer has already released on the likes of Canticle Records, E-HRZN, Influenced Records, DifferentSound, PRX records, BCCO, Akronym, Malör and more. With more big releases planned for the rest of the year, there's no sign of him slowing down. Mikrotakt can be identified as raw, percussive and groovy. His sets deliver pounding rhythms full of energy. He has recently started his own label "PRTL WRX" which is in its early stages and showing great promise. Mikrotakt is openly sharing all his knowledge on audio production by screen recording all his production sessions and publicly sharing them on patreon, this allows anyone to subscribe to his channel and view his production sessions.

The guest for this episode is the Rotterdam based KOOT.

He would describe his sound as ’the heavier side of hypno’. In his opinion, techno sets are most enjoyable when nuanced: slowly progressing in intensity through repetitive patterns and heavy layering. Requiring some patience from the listener but making the overall experience all the more rewarding! When DJ’ing, he aims to apply those these values to create a sound similar to what he loves to hear when on the dance floor himself.

Excited by Deepicnic’s request for a 1.5h+ podcast, he decided to take the time to create a more dancefloor oriented set than his usual work. Expect to hear darker atmospheres, obscure hypnotics and sci-fi sounds accompanied by a forceful low-end!

Other than DJ’ing himself, he puts his passion for techno music into practice through his recently founded platform called ‘Focal Point’. With Focal Point, Koot organizes livestream events as well as curating a podcast series on Soundcloud.

Clocking in with a two-hour trip into his boundary-pushing headspace, the Neapolitan maestro treats us to a wild ride of trampling uptempo funk, sci-fi-indebted flights and further alien-engineered heaters. Actively pushing hard-boiled techno wares and heavyweight floor artillery for breakfast, German jockey and producer Markus Suckut punches in with two hours of unrelenting dance floor hoodoo on our next installment. With a rather extensive catalogue of big-room rippers under his belt - including choice outings on Odd Even, Primordial State (a label he co-operates alongside Sven Eickhoff) and his own imprint, SCKT, Suckut pumps out a massively smashing two-hour mix for us, packed with his textbook industrial-leaning punch, a certain taste for laser-guided 4x4 stunts and further off-axis grooves straight out techno's outer space. Hop in for a mind-bending dive into a fractal-like torrent of raving material, honed and polished to deadly effect.

Set the Mood with Koot!

For this Christmas week, I invited Koot to create an opening set, and I thoroughly enjoyed the set he delivered!

Koot, full name Sander Koot, is an artist that’s currently based in Rotterdam but was born and raised in Utrecht.

In terms of style, his sets are best described as deep, atmospheric and heavily layered. Using tracks as tools, he always looks for tracks that contain interesting elements and textures to create depth in his sets.

He feels opening sets are often underappreciated, especially as the techno scene seems to focus on ‘harder, faster, stronger’. He enjoys (opening) sets most when they’re nuanced and slowly but steadily increasing in intensity. Requiring some patience from visitors of an event, but making the overall experience much more rewarding.

Other than DJ’ing himself, Koot expresses his love for electronic music by occasionally hosting small-scale livestream events in a local record shop (Nooit Gewoon) as well as a podcast series with his own platform called Focal Point.

Bokilifu Boni born in 1730 was a freedom fighter and leader of the Aluku tribe. He fought and fought for the freedom of our people and raiding all plantations until his death 
due to warfare  in 1793.
Here i am talking about him hundreds of years later with inspiration of his strength and devotion. His legacy lives through our free souls today.

With this mix i took it back to the very basics. the mindset of one big story where the rhythms lead you to hypnotize if locked in. Simplicity, with a less is more mentality. Inspired by the pace of the Apintie drums which is always fast and rhythmic.

Obscur has steadily built a name for himself as a DJ and producer dedicated to techno in its purest form. His productions are deep, driving, and subtly psychedelic, with great attention to detail, resulting in a sound that feels both mature and refined. Avoiding fleeting trends, he focuses on crafting timeless techno, rooted in a profound understanding of the genre’s essence. This commitment to authenticity has earned him recognition from respected labels such as Modularz, Paralelo, and Newrhythmic, where his work has been highly regarded. Each track underscores his unwavering passion for the genre and his relentless pursuit of innovation. As a DJ, Obscur approaches each set with the same level of intent, carefully constructing journeys that balance tension, momentum, and atmosphere.
