Lost at sea

Dusk at the Heronry - Waterbeach Lake. Easter 2025.  The unique sound of herons 'quacking'.  I understand this to be the 'begging call' of young herons at the nest.  Some distance away - I didn't want to get too close and disturb these birds.  I was setting up an overnight recording rig to capture the following morning's dawn chorus.  "Pammy' the binaural dummy head with a pair of MKH8020 mics to a SD MixPre-6. 24/48kHz.

I put out a droprig close to a nest of a Grey-headed Woodpecker in an aspen close to a small brook. In this recording you can discern a drumming Grey-headed Woodpecker and later on a dusk-singing Blackbird and Robin. And after sunset you will hear two wolves howl in the distance and in the final minutes a calling Great Grey Owl.

This howl took me by surprise. The wolf call I have heard before is when the parents call to their young in August to September. Often the young wolves join the choir in September. This is obviously quite another call. Discussed it with several colleagues knowledgeable about wolves and we came to the conclusion that this is most likely an 'alpha male' doing this to let other packs or wolves in local territory to stay away. This is the time they are having their pups and if they have young nearby the parents are likely on high alert!

This track features the haunting vocalizations of the Common Loon. The ambient "roar" you'll hear is the sound of gentle night breezes swishing through the treetops of large Red Pines nearby. (One critical listener calls this element "sublime.") Recorded late May, 2008. Skies were mostly clear; winds were light and variable; temp. was in the low 50s (F).

Borneo Rainforest - Dawn - Gibbons

Night gently transitioning to day in the misty World Heritage Listed Gondwana rainforest amongst ancient Antarctic Beeches. On this January morning the subdued dawn light of the cloudy mountain top meant that the night shift of insects, cicadas and frogs continued well after the day shift begins at first light. For most of the year Eastern Yellow Robin leads the chorus but it is silent or absent on this morning. The frog calling is the "Pouched", "Marsupial" or "Hip-Pocket" frog, Assa darlingtonii, named for the brood pouches on the males, where the tadpoles travel to after hatching. (Thanks Jeremy).White-throated treecreeper is first followed at 4:30 by Alberts Lyrebird calling a little tentatively out of breeding season. Other species in this recording include Lewins Honeyeater, Brown Cuckoo Dove, Satin Bowerbird, Yellow-throated Scrubwren, White-Browed Scrubwren, King Parrot, Crimson Rosella, Bassian Thrush, Grey Shrike-thrush, Grey Fantail, Green Catbird, and the Eastern Whipbirds are feeding in pairs with an adult and a juvenile together. 
The recording begins 5 minutes before first light and continues till five minutes after dawn. Altitude 1140m ASL. Sennheiser MKH8020 in Iso-Binaural Stereo, SD702.

Gondwanan Forest Awakens

Summer nights in Finland are very short and full of life. From dusk to dawn voices change every few minutes, I just didn't know where to cut this track. The recording was made near a bird watching tower (Lintutorni) at Latosaari, Suomenperänjärvi, Finland.

Headphones recommended.
