better known as Reka, has blown up on the world stage since beginning out as a DJ more than 10 years ago. Since then, she’s become a long time resident at Tresor, embarked on a career as a producer ( her debut EP, Diving the Innermost came out on Phase Fatal’s BITE in 2018) and made the jump to Berghain. But there’s more to Mendez than being a connoisseur of all genres dark and hard-edged. In addition to being a DJ, Mendez is an entrepreneur and a science enthusiast. KEYI sat down to talk with her about her world before techno and the ways in which research and precision define her creative work and her extra musical life.

Phase Fatale is the Berlin-based techno project of Hayden Payne. Since 2014 the New York native has earned a reputation as a techno innovator, both for the broad spectrum of dystopian, gritty, industrial-laden electronics included in DJ sets as well as his deep understanding of synthesis and sound design in his own productions.

Phase Fatale has been turning heads with his debut album in 2017, and 12”s on labels such as Jealous God, Ostgut Ton, and its sub-label unterton. He has since settled into residencies at both Berghain in Berlin as well as 中 KHIDI in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi.

In 2018, Payne launched his own label BITE, where he introduced Soft Crash - the pi- oneering ‘Italo body music’ project in collaboration with Pablo Bozzi. In 2020, Payne released his second solo album Scanning Backwards on Ostgut Ton, while 2022 saw his third solo album and the widely anticipated debut album by Soft Crash.

Phase Fatale’s output as a selector, as well as his productions and curation on BITE demonstrate Payne’s unique musical vision, drawing from new and classic references: dark ambient drones contrasting with the raw, punchy dynamics of industrial and post- punk, cold wave aesthetics combine with 4/4 techno functionality – all stitched togeth- er meticulously with strong atmospheric sensibilities, careful and precise mixing

What his work has in common is its ability to form a community out of a disparate group of outsiders with bravado. As a DJ, Marsman wants to make you dance with your head held high. His sound evokes a retro-futuristic euphoria. Nostalgic without being stuck in the past, it fosters the return of songs to the club; of sex, warmth and basslines to the dancefloor. For his Ground Floor selection, the dj leaned into slower rhythms and minimalist sound—music that unfolds gradually, inviting a subtle shift from light to darkness. Chontane dug into tracks from the 2000s and 2010s, chasing a sound that blends naturally into the space and lets the story unfold without rush or pressure.

Before the Curfew is a series of music podcasts that emerged in 2022 after the reopening of the club following the liberation of the Kyiv region. All recordings presented in this series take place before midnight before the curfew begins. Before the Curfew offers a vibrant snapshot of the Ukrainian music scene amidst challenging times, celebrating resilience, creativity, and unity through music.

Adorning their DJ sets in various forms of white wedding dresses and baroque embroidery, Projekt Gestalten’s queer desire and bold feminine spirit flaunts a unrivaled promiscuity of tongue-in-cheek tawdry that’s pushing techno music and its artistic, sexual appetites that much further.  Having found pride of place as an established entity controlling soundtracks at risque nightspots and parties the world over - namely making their way through London, St. Petersburg and New York to São Paulo and Paris - Diego Garcia’s emergence from the obscure raves of Berlin and its presiding internet culture now sees the artist, with a burgeoning discography and remix catalogue for the reckoning, as an out and loud center stage presence and trailblazing queer, music identity.
