Australian Kia very quickly rose up through the grimy after-hours rave scene of Melbourne to make her mark on the international stage. Now Berlin-based, her unique grasp of rhythm is rooted in a love of bass, IDM and deeper techno though she is adept at exploring a wide range of moods within those worlds. She has done so at places like ADE and our own festival and extends her good taste to the curation of her Animalia imprint and its ambient sub-label Cirrus as well as her own original tracks on Nous'klaer Audio.

In this week's mix, Kia showcases a colourful and kaleidoscopic take on techno which she says was awakened by an early trip to Japan's famously head Labyrinth festival. It's a hi-fidelity feast of supple rhythms, icy synths and deep space ambiance that unfolds in late-night fashion. The melodies are as delicate as silk, the drums rubbery yet punchy. It's high-paced future music that manages to be as delicate and beautiful as it is dynamic.

"My mission is to explore the boundaries of psychedelic music." The revered techno artist talks about expanding consciousness, breaking the rules and his new album on Tresor. 

There has always been a strain of dance music that has leant psychedelic, from the leftfield psychoacoustics of pioneers like La Monte Young to the proggy techno taking over today's dance floors. One artist who embodies the spirit of psychedelia is Anthony Child, AKA Surgeon, a revered DJ and producer who has historically been placed in the world of industrial techno, but whose output over the years has consistently flirted with altered states of consciousness and a strong opposition to the mainstream.

Child is originally from Birmingham, where he and Karl O'Connor, AKA Regis, helped birth a style of powerful, loop-driven techno. Together, they're British Murder Boys and have released music on O'Connor's seminal label Downwards. But they've also ploughed successful solo careers, with Child putting out several releases on Tresor and performing live improvised electronics as Surgeon and as part of ambient listening duo The Transcendence Orchestra.

In this interview, Child talks about his most recent release on Tresor, the album Shell~Wave, and its innovative use of techniques associated with Jamaican dub. He also discusses the through line of psychedelia in his work and what it means to surrender oneself to sometimes uncomfortable processes—both creatively and in life—and come out the other side. There are strong links to spirituality and Buddhism in Child's work, many of which are designed to prompt listeners to question and reconsider the boundaries they've set around the reality they live in. Not too long ago, I stepped into the world of playing live-sets, a new and inspiring chapter in my creative path. Every set has been a learning experience. Preparing for these shows means creating a lot of new music, and I’ve decided it’s time to share more of it through my new ‘Luna Ludmila Live’ Bandcamp series. Each track is carefully road-tested in my shows before being released.

The second track in the series, 'Chord Tool', is a energetic but stripped-down piece built around delayed chords and a forward-moving bassline. I first played it in Barcelona last summer and it hasn't left my live-set ever since.

Luna Ludmila - Chord Tool [Bandcamp Exclusive]

Montreal-based DJ, producer and label owner Francis Latrielle, better known as Priori, joins us for the 79th edition of the Phonica Mix Series.

Priori has become a firm favourite of ours here at Phonica over the past couple of years. His releases, which crossover through many electronic genres, from house and techno to IDM and ambient, have been picked up by such labels as Echovolt and Dust E-1’s Dust World in recent years, although much of his musical output, including his phenomenal 2019 album, ‘On A Nimbus’, comes via his own label, NAFF, which he co-runs with fellow Montrealer Ex-Terrestrial.
