We welcome Alex Kennon to our Source to Cycle podcast series. With such a rich musical background Alex was destined for a career in music. Now with summer approaching, he sits proudly on a bed of releases across seminal labels Get Physical, Bedrock, NONSTOP, SAVED. With a passport of historic gigs already under his belt, 2018 sees Alex spin at some of the key global clubbing destinations, The Social Festival - Mexico, Extrema - Belgium, Sunwaves - Romania, a double date with Luciano in June over in Spain as well as rounding off the summer in style at BPM - Portugal. Alex also takes his blend of inimitable rhythmic house and techno to the white isles of Ibiza where he also resides over the summer season too.

His character runs parallel with his productions, one that stands out whether behind the decks or not, be prepared for an energetic and charismatic Italian, whose passions dance between MotoGP, animals and food away from the music.

Having polished his sound in the studio, he returns to Fanciulli’s Saved Records in May, plus releases on Moan Recordings, Oblack Records and also fellow Italian Pirupa’s NONSTOP imprint, giving the classic Party Non Stop a new lick of paint for the 2018 remix pack alongside wAFF, Max Chapman, LEON and Shaf Huse.

In this week’s installment of OL Selectors, we welcome Papa Lu. 

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Papa Lu was exposed to a vast and diverse selection of underground music which he gladly absorbed at a young age. Finding himself instantly drawn to a thriving Hip Hop scene at the time, he dove right into the business of throwing parties, working with classic artists of the true school era like Digable Planets, Digital Underground, Gang Starr, Kool Keith, and many more. During that time, several house music pioneers like Mark Farina, Derrick Carter, DJ Sneak, etc. were making waves at the same venues he was holding his hip hop shows. From that exposure, he made a quick transition into producing house music events like his Night Moves party at Monarch SF. 
His love for music and natural talent for booking events rapidly developed into an exciting career of discovering new artists and bringing new sounds and talent to the Bay Area through his parties. He also collaborated with a group of close friends to create the Kazbah, one of the most popular sound camps at Burningman, and worked to rapidly gain a mass following through his signature sound known throughout Black Rock City and beyond.

A lot has happened in the last 20 years of dance music, but one constant has been Get Physical right at the sharp end of the scene. The label has become a globally recognised symbol of quality, renowned for its always varied and vital house output. Forming the backbone of the label's vast catalogue is the influential in-house DJ mix series, Body Language. It is a snapshot of exactly where the underground is at and has been assembled by tastemakers such as Azari & III, Catz ‘N Dogz, Dixon, DJ Hell, Francesco Tristano, Nôze and of course label-founders Booka Shade, DJ T., and M.A.N.D.Y..

Next to that there has been a constant stream of innovative, dance-floor ready singles, crossover club classics, seminal remixes and a number of standout artist albums. The label has always stayed true to its house roots, but with a rich array of influences taken from the worlds of disco, deep, tech and melodic house. Along the way, Get Physical´s core artists have been joined by red hot new talents including Alinka, Thandi Draai, PAUZA, Yulia Niko, Birds Of Mind, CIOZ and Monkey Safari. There have also been carefully considered forays into thriving house music scenes in Africa, Brazil, Cuba, Croatia and India: dedicated compilations and EPs have highlighted those region's most exciting new talents and given them a global platform. 

The name says it all: Get Physical tracks could hardly be more moving and corporeal. It was true in 2002, and it will be true in 2022 and beyond. To celebrate the occasion, the label will reissue some of its most classic tracks, host special anniversary events and release a new range of merchandise in collaboration with Australian brand One Teaspoon. Get Physical has already made a huge contribution to the history of contemporary house music, but rest assured the German label still has plenty more to say.
