Shindig Weekender have teamed up with Ghetto Funk to offer aspiring DJs the opportunity to win a set at this year’s event in the Ghetto Funk Nightclub. The winner will be playing alongside huge acts including: Sugarhill Gang, Furious 5, Stanton Warriors, Krafty Kuts, A.Skillz, Koan Sound, JFB, WBBL, Stickybuds, Featurecast, Father Funk, HongKongPingPong  to name a few…

The Prize:

The first prize winner will get to play at the festival in the Ghetto Funk Nightclub on Friday 26th May. You will be the opening act for this years event and the first person to play in the Ghetto Funk Nightclub in 2017! The winner will also get 2 weekend tickets to the festival and a goodie bag full of stickers, t-shirts, vinyl and some other treats!

Ghetto Funk & Shindig Weekender 2017 DJ Competition Entries

Saturday 24th May, Shindig Weekender at Fernhill Farm on the Mendips near Bath was the 22nd reunion of the Stardust Collective and man was it a blinder! 

The Stardust Collective was a Bath based group of DJs that came together in the early 1990’s and literally rocked the sox off the parties they played across the South West. Regular appearances at The Brunel Rooms Amphitheatre coupled with residencies at The Tropic, Lakota and of course the legendary Hub Club in Bath cemented their reputation for putting on the most intense and vibrant nights. They were never afraid to unleash the big tunes and played truly eclectic party music from funk and soul through to house and techno mixing and matching the styles with off the cuff selections to suit the crowd’s energy at any one given time - always gradually rising in tempo and intensity throughout the night - and always with a sprinkling of disco which underpins their up-for-it party credentials.

This Saturday night in Somerset, the main crew regrouped, coming from far and wide for the first time proper since their 10th anniversary. Thankfully the loyal following of true party people from all those years ago had gathered together to lend support and ensure that the party lifted into orbit - these boys after all always play to the crowd.

The night started with at 6pm with a hero of all of ours, the inimitable Greg Wilson, what an honour to have such an inspirational DJ to launch proceedings, and boy did he set the standard! At 8pm, Jamie (aka DJ Policy from Brainstorm and Universe), kicked off the Stardust crew sets with his unique slow-mo bottom-end heavy, funky shuffle house, followed by Nathan (who some might also know from Dig the New Breed and the New York’s Funky Soul Rebels), next up was Simon (aka Slim Goodgroove - who needs no introduction), Mikey Stardust and then Robin (Mono who led another big West country night; Gorgeous), the two crew members who also turned Stardust into a record shop in Bath in the late 90’s. To round off this blazing party before Graeme Park took it into the small hours was Gee-Mix (Universe) who is possibly the most revered DJ in the South West.

The night took in as many party classics as was possible to fit in and was an uncompromising salute to the heady days of the original Stardust parties. The crowd were awesome and made the whole evening rock out beyond all our greatest hopes! If you were there back in the day these mixes will bring back beautiful memories and if you weren’t then hopefully you’ll catch a glimpse of the magic that kept those dreams alive!

Foolishly set myself the challenge of squeezing 30 tracks into 30 minutes so there's all sorts of goodness and badness to cram in your ear holes.

Made using 2xTechnics 1210's, TTm57sl, launchpad, serato, a bunch of my own edits and a few beers.
