About the piece:

Childhood Renderings is inspired by the free willed nature of the child's mind.  The work uses four different folk tunes, traditionally associated with children, along with newly composed music to create a representation of how a child's mind reacts to the world.  The use of sections that start out short but get longer as the piece goes on is meant to convey the childhood maturing process.  A variety of sounds, styles, and  moods are used to relate to a child's strong imagination.  Finally, the use of a small ensemble containing all solo instruments is intended to give the music an exposed 'toy-like' sound.  As a whole, Childhood Renderings should make you feel like a kid again.

"Metal Meditation: for Percussion Ensemble" is a combination of two elements: metallic percussion instruments and a slow, meditative style.  The beginning and end sections are the same music and are meant to be very free and slow.  This symbolizes the entering and exiting of a meditative state.  The middle section builds to a climax which is signaled by two hits of the finger cymbals.  This section symbolizes someone reaching a realization or a sense of enlightenment.  The piece is written for western listeners so that they can be shortly enveloped in a sense of meditation.  More traditional eastern music of this kind would be much longer and much more repetitive.  This piece could potentially be lengthened by repeating the starting/ending section more and playing the middle section once or twice.  In this way, it would become more meditative and require the listeners to be in a more meditative state of mind.

The root definition of the word “procession” is to move along or advance. It is typically applied to people and formalized ceremonies though the word can also be more vaguely applied to animals and inanimate objects. This piece of music was created thinking of the many meanings and contexts of the word “procession” and then depicting those thoughts with sound. 
The piece has two main thematic sections, A and B. A is slow and expressive while B heavy and pushing forward. The form of the piece is ABABA with the A sections getting progressively shorter and the second B section longer than the first. The A sections are meant to be very melodic and free while the B sections are more rhythmic and harmonically driven. The B sections use double stops frequently along with the second B section using quick pizzicato runs.
