Phantasy Remixes

Over a year since the release of his acclaimed, self titled debut album, and following a series of remixes from the likes of Gerd Janson, Shan and Audion, Ghost Culture returns to Phantasy with ‘Safe/Multiply’. An unashamedly club-rooted double single, both tracks find Ghost Culture’s expert electronic manipulation in more direct mode, recalling the tension and euphoria of early experiments ‘Red Smoke’, ‘Half Open’ and Understand. 

‘Safe’ wastes little time in exploring the more acidic soul of Ghost Culture's unmistakable sound. Grinding out a complex and uncompromising 303 over a landscape of sound that is ethereal and absorbing all on its own, the track subtly builds to an overwhelming and enrapturing breakdown, levelling out while having lost none of its ecstatic energy. 

Meanwhile, ‘Multiply’ creates a stunning build and release, conjuring an atmosphere that is easy to get lost in. An occasional spoken word interjection of the track’s telling title guides a delicate but powerful mix of punching drums amid a wilfully psychedelic escalation of synths. It’s a welcome return from Ghost Culture while he develops the sound of his new album – stay tuned for more news on that, coming soon.

Two years on from his critically acclaimed self-titled debut LP and 2016’s similarly transcendent club hit 'Safe/Multiply', Ghost Culture is pleased to announce his new 5 track EP. 'Nucleus', captures the enigmatic London artist’s signature sound in the reflection of unexpected, vibrant new lights.

Leading with the understated groove of ‘Coma’, Ghost Culture quickly reaffirms his unwavering ability to hold the collective energy of a dancefloor, yet colours his latest work with a sense of intimacy and experimentation that resonates stronger than ever.

‘ICO130’ explores almost every facet of Ghost Culture’s electronic form, as gasping synths and stuttering drum patterns flirt with an aching, unfurling emotional vocal sample, acknowledging both classic IDM influences such as Aphex Twin and Authechre, while subtly nodding towards contemporary, crystalline RnB.
 
The EP’s centrepiece, ‘NGC1275’ adds flavour to a stirring, reflective acid line, amid a complex flurry of minor deconstructions and distortions, highlighting Ghost Culture’s unique, contrarian ability to inspire both beckoning darkness and escapist fantasy through his work.
 
While the opening half of the five track EP is more primed for the night, Nucleus’ leads to an introspective denouement. ‘Perseus’ pits raw electronics against a framework of loose, lucid drums, before ‘NGC1265’ delivers a wistful, brooding conclusion that makes an emotive case that impacts powerfully across just a short sketch.

Following on from 2017’s experimentally-focused EP, ‘Nucleus’, Axon finds Phantasy regular Ghost Culture return with an urgent, pristine slice of club euphoria, backed by a standout remix from Legowelt. The original version of ‘Axon’ powers ahead with a supremely physical bassline and a ghostly atmosphere that’s slathered with atmospheric choral touches, contrasted by punching, powerful drums. Each perfectly tuned element weaves a seriously impressive spell of charismatic, contemporary electro.

'Axon’s original form is then driven underground and transformed into something truly psychedelic at the hands of legendary producer and synth legend, Legowelt. Coaxing out one of his distinctive acid lines, the Hague resident unravels a heady, hazy atmosphere of creeping euphoria amid a spectral, twilight groove.

With his first two singles for Phantasy, “Mouth” and “Giudecca”, Ghost Culture, emerged from the shadows with a beautifully elusive sound.

“Understand” (the B-side to 'Arms') is born from a dusty corner of the nightclub, relentlessly growing in intensity throughout, it surrounds the dancefloor in a beautiful techno sprawl.

The acid flavour of the EP opener "Safe" sees Ghost Culture turning classic club sounds to a darker tone of house and techno. Still 'unashamedly club-rooted', the track sees progressions through different landscapes of dance music history – all painted within Phantasy's rubric of steady tension and euphoric release throughout.

Ghost Culture makes a return to Phantasy with a digital double-side of emotive and futurist electro, ‘Blue Ice/Meltwater’.

‘Blue Ice’ dives immediately into trippy euphoria, perfectly engineered to transmit a trance- like effect on listeners. It’s tunnelling energy doesn’t let up from beginning to end, melting through layer-upon-layer of serotonin-altering rave oscillations, awash in a texture that lands somewhere between melancholy and euphoria, strobe light and sunrise.

‘Meltwater’ meanwhile begins unassumingly, executing a spacious rhythm that is soon consumed by powerful sub-bass weight and an almost overwhelming rush of analogue synthesis. The result is a weightless, aquatic blend of rhythm and melody, destined to create any number of transcendent moments on the largest of sound systems, without sacrificing the flawless composition at the heart of Ghost Culture’s music.

Phantasy's 100 single release retrospective continues, as Gramrcy & John Loveless remix Ghost Culture’s ‘ICO130’, first released as part of the ‘Nucleus’ EP in 2017. 'ICO130' (A Gramrcy & Loveless Mix) is available exclusively through Phantasy’s Bandcamp from Friday August 7th. All proceeds from sale will go to the Stephen Lawrence Trust, the London-based organisation founded to tackle inequality in all forms, until August 31st.

The recently formed Berlin studio partnership coax the frenetic patterns of the original into deeper, dreamer and softly anthemic territory. Driven by the spirit of dub techno and minimal influences, the reimagining nonetheless possesses emotional impact amid swells of unapologetic bass.
