I. is the debut album of the Širom trio, comprised of Ana Kravanja, Samo Kutin and Iztok Koren, who stem from the Slovenian regions of Kras, Tolminsko and Prekmurje and are members of various other groups, such as Najoua or ŠKM banda. 

Their form of expression is original, stylistically homogeneous, incorporating a wide array of folk sounds on one side and contemporary acoustic rock style meditations on the other. The end result is grounded yet still mystical minimalism. 

Širom's music is contemplative, but can get harder when necessary, it is closer to being band- than chamber-like, to being street as opposed to urban in nature. It is mostly instrumental and features miniature combinations of folk, classical and improvisational elements to make for an original and very moving experience. It is already interesting enough to look at the building blocs of Širom's sound, since the musicians use a wide range of instruments from around the world, including the banjo, ukulele and balafon, as well as homemade instruments and bells. It is unbelievable what a world of sound they conjure up, how many nuances of sound, how quickly this penetrates the ears and cuts into the subconscious. 

The creating of patterns and entwining of delicate musical pastels calls for a focused listener, since there is a feeling that the fragile edifice can be blown away in any moment. The lyrical and sophisticated album reveals an unfathomable beauty of dichotomies – it is sophisticated but at the same time never finished, unobtrusive but still principled, improvisational and collective, curious and simultaneously fatigued, restless and ethereal. 

Širom have released a record which unveils the personal while discovering new worlds and which deserves to be celebrated as a gem of the Slovenian music scene, notwithstanding or maybe precisely because of all the misguided attempts at defining “slovenianhood”.

Chandra Oppenheim was a child star like no other. As the daughter of famed conceptual artist Dennis Oppenheim. By age nine, Chandra was staying up late at her parents’ art-world parties, collaborating in her father’s projects, and performing her own plays at downtown hotspots such as The Kitchen and Franklin Furnace.

This set the stage for Chandra’s course-altering collaboration with members of The Dance, who were looking to form yet another project and found their muse/fuse in 10-year-old Chandra. Transportation EP, originally released in 1980 by The Dance’s own label, ON/GoGo. Balancing on razor- wire guitars, liquid bass lines, and dub-style melodica, the Chandra band unveiled their first four songs: “Opposite”, “Concentration”, “Subways”, and “Kate.”

At age 12, the post-punk pre-teen took the stage with her band for the first
time at New York’s legendary Mudd Club. A whirlwind of press coverage
ensued from glossy magazines like Vogue and Paris Match to the influential underground zine Non LP B Side and a Soho News cover story.

The infectious, propulsive “Get It Out Of Your System” opens Chandra’s second EP with one of her most commanding performances. “Stranger” slows the pace with stop-start rhythms, woozy synths, and the harmonized return of the melodica, while its lyrics find her being followed by a mysterious character revealed to be a woman. “Tish Le Dire” sounds like The B-52s in an eerie alternate universe with instructions on speaking up to your parents or authorities to the point of threatening suicide.

Chandra stepped away from the band at age 14 to focus on her education. Sadly, the second EP was shelved and would not see the light of day for decades.

Chandra’s trip continues with this new deluxe reissue from Telephone Explosion Records. Returning her debut EP to its original four- song, single-record release at a dancefloor-ready remastered 45 RPM, the expanded edition also adds to the second EP with a pair of never released songs from her 1983 four-track cassette demos. “Day Without Success” and “They’re All Alike” find Chandra’s dreamlike vocals driven by minimal wave synth zaps and pulsating drum machines.

Où cela commence-t-il ?
Where does cultural appropriation end and procreational fusion begin?
The answer to that depends on the perceiver.

For some, applying the structures of electronic music to folkloristic samples may seem de-contextualizing. Yet when considering the similarity between dancefloor compositions and the minimalism of Steve Reich and Terry Riley, the gap to traditional music begins to fade away. They remain distinct mostly by aesthetic characteristics of sound.

Nicolas Sheikholeslami’s premiere solo record as Çaykh is named after the French conjunction "Où" - meaning “where” - as this was the linking element during production. We witness an attempt to re-contextualize music that travelled from analog tapes - recorded in different localities along the Indian Ocean - to a hard-drive via 192kb youtube rips. The sample-based compositions were digitally arranged before regaining their warm sonic qualities in a vintage mixing studio.

This EP assembles three metamorphic 4th-world disco pulsations. Expect some heavily trancy and polyrhythmic analogue-fi jams.

Nicolas Sheikholeslami aka Çaykh is a Hamburg-born and Berlin-based DJ and producer. He is active as drummer & percussionist for the projects Spiritczualic Enhancement Center and Circuit Diagram.

Çaykh’s three earlier sound-collage cassette releases have already earned him a certain fame in the 4th-world and outsider-disco realms. His collection of pre-war Somali music called “Au revoir, Mogadishu“ paved the way for the Grammy-nominated “Sweet as Broken Dates“ compilation, which he co-curated.
