El Hardwick's musical endeavours centre around a series of themes close to their heart. Working across several disciplines - music, photography, writing and directing - El seeks to examine the connection between bodies and their environments, queer worldmaking practices and ways in which we can heal.

While their visual work has spawned collaborations and commissions for the likes of Vivienne Westwood, Adidas and Little Simz, alongside features in Vogue, Dazed, Crack and more, their music has been housed on releases for West Friends, Desire Lines and, most recently, 33-33.

After shedding their former moniker, Moonbow, in favour of their own name, El has shaped a healing, multi-layered sound that draws on stirring ambient, crystallised IDM and downtempo breaks.

You can hear this blend of immersive flavours across last year's LP, 8, which marked the first full release El shared under their name. Their latest project is a remix package of that debut album. El has called on a stellar roster of artists to rework the tracks, including 96 Back, Tony Njoku and Laura Misch, with all the profits being split equally between We Exist, whose trans* hardship fund directly supports trans people in need, and surgery recovery costs for O, a trans non-binary artist and driving force in London’s queer and trans communities.

Ahead of the release tomorrow, El softens the edges with a mix of ambient textures and meditative soundscapes to rejuvenate us before the weekend...

s: unpredictably. sometimes i sleep and wake up with the hazy memory of a glorious adventure, other days I wake with the horror of a nightmare clinging to my subconscious, and sometimes I can’t sleep at all...

o: are you a daydreamer or night swimmer?
s: always both ~ swimming in the daydreams, dreaming in the night swims.

o: where do you go to dream?
s: music is my portal to the dreamland. drone for the deepest cerebral dissolution into the realm of the imagination, something more energetic or colourful if I want to fly through the sky.

o: what was the last thing you heard that moved you?
s: the rustling leaves of trees in the wind, and birds calling to each other on a walk this morning.

o: have you ever cried on the dance floor?
s: yes, though not often, I’m more of “cry on the inside” dancer.

s: in my living room, with my favourite cedar incense burning (i burn this every time I record a mix, a little ritual which always brings me to the right zone).

o: what drew you to the sounds?
s: you my bb <3 
this mix is my interpretation of all our beautiful sobcore listening sessions in your room after nights out, our shared love of soft emotional music, and how that translates into my sound. it’s sobcore x deep mind music, a journey for deep feelings, philosophical chats, cosy cuddles and imaginal drifting ~

o: what are you looking forward to the most this year?
s: i am most excited for the summer months to finally arrive, so I can once again frolic with friends in nature, listening to music outside 🤸🌲🌞

This beautiful twelfth episode of our Herbarium series was recorded by the gifted @janloup. We are particularly impressed by this one as it underlines our love for brave sound experiments combined intriguing grooves. This journey goes into so many different directions while it never loses it's thrilling and powerful attitude.
Jan Loup chose the Helichrysum as the topic for this mix. This plant never let's its leaves fall, it keeps them all year. Its name comes from the sun “Helios” ( greek) and “Chrysos”, gold. It likes to install itself in the cracks between rocks, in an environnement close to the sea. It is known to have great power of healing wounds and burns. In Homer's Odyssee myth, Princess Nausicaa rubs the injured body of Ulysse with Helichrysum and saves him from death. The secret of her beauty resided in the daily usage of this plant as a youth elixir.
Despite this story, the plant is called immortal because even when cut, it keeps its shape, blossom and color. All the myths and the recent observation of her incredible properties make the Helichrysum mysterious and powerful. Resistant, resilient, curing.

The talented producer & dj has quickly marked his signature sound, dubby & smooth as silk, oozing a specific warmth and groove which listeners can quickly recognise as Command D. Keep an eye out for a forthcoming release by Charley out on Animalia, due out very soon :) He's also working on a debut live set which he'll showcase over the Australian summer.

e:absolutely a day dreamer, i spent all of my childhood being told off for it at school. i always say i’m solar powered as i lose most of my energy once night falls.

o:where do you go to dream?
e:the wilderness.

o:what was the last thing you heard that moved you?
e:my friend nicolette iles makes monthly 5 hour playlists for their patreon subscribers - everything in their last playlist was spectacular and moving.

o:have you ever cried on the dance floor?
e:i don’t recall on a dance floor, but i cried when Jenny Hval played one of my most favourite songs ‘cemetery of splendour’ at one of the first gigs i went to after lockdown. it was accompanied by visuals of her husky running through the norwegian forest, with a go-pro on his neck filming from his perspective. you could just see his fluffy ears and paws in the corner on the lens and it overwhelmed me with hope and tenderness.

o:where did you record this mix? 
e:in my living room across two very rainy days, with my cat sleeping close by.

o:what drew you to the sounds?
e:the running thread was conversations we’ve had and music we’ve shared together. also lots of reverb and 90’s nostalgia.

o:what's your plan next weekend?
e:i'm going to a cloud bath by my friend saxophonist laura misch, and doing a taster pottery class - a birthday present from my partner because they know i've wanted to play with clay for a long time!

Music is all about connections, and is at it´s most vital when it speaks to you in a voice only you seem to hear. 
For Berlin-based Refracted, electronic music, and techno in particular, is the chosen medium to find his unique voice, to connect. 
And a growing number of people, wanting more from techno than formulaic entertainment and a soundtrack to dance to, are
connecting with his particular vision and peculiar sound. 
This might be because Refracted´s music feels as fundamentally human as it soundsotherworldly. 
It is techno more as an idea and conduit, than as an easilylabeled
sound. It is dance music where layered rhythms act almost on a
neural, sub epidermal level, while moving and evolving soundscapes
acquire a tactile, understated physicality. 
Paramount examples of this can be found on releases on Refracted's own Mind Express label, and on celebrated labels like PoleGroup and Canadian ambient/deep-techno imprint Silent Season. 
His path unravelling further, a mind set on favouring unflinching quality over quantity.
The dynamics created by this yearning to displace us from space and self, while rooted in a elemental, naturalistic approach, which catalyzes inner self discovery, are also at the foundation of his DJing. 
Spiritual, almost meditative, his sets possess a kinetic energy as well, which is a clear indication of a DJ who knows the fundamental role of dancing as part of the ritual. 
He wants to take us somewhere, the “where” being of our own choosing, the trail never being the most travelled.

SIREN's Moonbow celebrates all things piano with a drone-leaning contribution to the Concept in Practice series. After all, it is Piano Day.

"Started 4 years ago by German composer Nils Frahm, Piano Day falls on the 88th day of each year (this year it's March 29th) and many events and releases come together to celebrate the magic of this (conventionally) 88-key instrument. For a while I’ve been wanting to make a mix of ambient and drone music that is centered around sustained piano notes, and today felt like the perfect time to release it. Recently, meditation has been my lifeline whilst being essentially house bound for two months due to health reasons, and I owe so much to ambient music for being such an incredible tool for healing — so I hope this mix can also help others too.

Sonically, this mix is as much about the moments of silence as it is about the music itself, with each new track emerging from a mist left by the one before. I wanted to make a mix that honours the piano’s ability to beautifully bridge the gap between acoustic and electronic music." – Moonbow

Concept In Practice: Moonbow's 'Piano Drone' Mix

Earlier this year, London-based multidisciplinary artist El Hardwick ventured away from their Moonbow moniker to share their debut album 8 under their own name.

Hardwick’s vision of ambient music, and lived experience of its cathartic or soothing capabilities, is masterfully explored in their Sunday Mix. While words like ‘transportive’ or ‘otherworldly’ are quite often used overzealously when discussing projects quite as lulling as this, Hardwick’s gentle touch, tracklist choices and sci-fi inclinations coax assertive qualities from the undeniably subdued.
