Caleb Smith is a singer/songwriter from South Carolina. He also fronts the indie rock band, Ghosts of the Kodiak.

In 2006, three friends started playing music together in a damp garage in a small southern town in South Carolina. Four years later, Ghosts of the Kodiak was born out of their collective drive to make “serious” music. Caleb Smith (singer, songwriter and rhythm guitarist for the band) compares this to “serious fiction,” the trade practiced by writers such as Leo Tolstoy, Louis Auchincloss and David Foster Wallace. Douglas LaBier of the Huffington Post says about “serious fiction”: that it helps you “evolve your soul”. This is because, according to LaBier, “[delving] into serious fiction engages you in the core human issues that everyone grapples with, consciously or unconsciously.”
Similar is the vein in which Ghosts of the Kodiak conceives of “serious music”: It is music that “speaks,” and says much more than “this is a clever lyric, this is a melodic guitar part, this is a pithy drum fill;” it is music that says “this is what it means to be a human being.”
After spending a year in London (where the band played several shows) from 2013-2014, Smith has returned to the U.S. to make music with Ghosts of the Kodiak in a more serious capacity than ever before. For lead guitarist William Powell, the band is about “being a part of something bigger than yourself.” And this is a sentiment shared by all of its members. After eight years, the flame burns brighter than ever in Ghosts of the Kodiak, who is constantly crafting its sound: “more refined, more thoughtful, more serious” – this is the aim.
Having established themselves locally through years of performing consistently in S.C. cities like Columbia and Greenville, the band, now based in Charlotte, N.C., seeks to take their music to stages across the nation.
