"One thing I can say with certainty that has informed my identity just as much as music is my love for reading, my bandcamp collection rivalled only by my vast collection of books and comics that take over most corners of my apartment. And just like ambient music has an especially big place in my heart, the same can be said about fantasy novels. 

From my childhood favourite series The Edge Chronicles (the map of which I got tattooed across my chest as an adult) to Ursula K Le Guin’s Earthsea books, to modern masterpieces like Simon Jimenez’s The Spear Cuts Through Water, these books have imprinted themselves on my very being. They imagine worlds of magical possibility, but also don’t shy away from very real and increasingly immediate topics such as war, xenophobia, greed, mans exploitation of the earth, of women, of children, of innocence and all things good. Even in the older classics like Lord of the Rings where the line between good and evil are much more obvious than the grey morality of our world, there exists within much more relatable human stories of friendship, of commitment to those you love and those who will come after, of putting your life on the line for the future prosperity of those you believe should be protected.

I am not ashamed to admit that I try to live my life according to how my favourite characters in fantasy would act. I think there is this idea that reading fantasy should be an escape, but I refute that, much like I disagree that ambient music should be used simply as a balm to block out the world and help us ignore reality. These books and music that we love that imagine a better world make me want to live life in a way where we can make that happen, standing strong with our communities and forever fighting against injustice."

Fantasy Mix for Borscht Radio

I am incredibly excited to officially launch my new mix series, spirit paths, with an inaugural mix of ambient, glitch, and sad/slow guitar music from yours truly. I wrote a bit about what this series means to me and why I started it which is a bit too long for this space, but you can find here on my substack:

"My hope is for spirit paths to serve as a space for contributors to create something honest and vulnerable. Something that feels nourishing and true to them. An opportunity to dive deep and let the music guide us. At the core of this series is the belief that when we approach our art with honesty and an intent to share a real piece of who we are, it can bring us towards a greater understanding of ourselves and each other. And in some cases, it can even connect us to the spirits of those we love.

With that said, I am honoured to bring you the first edition of spirit paths with an inaugural mix from myself. I’ve spoken plenty already on what the series means to me, but for my mix I think it’s best to let the music do the talking. I tried to put as much of myself into this one as I could. I hope in its own small way, it can help bring us a bit closer to understanding each other. Thanks for listening, and for being here on this journey with me."
