“Askya” is the opening track from 8 by Laxá & Heima Kvartett — a post-rock collective blending Icelandic string quartet textures with guitar, bass, drums, and organ.

Inspired by the volcanic landscape of Askja in Iceland’s highlands, this piece is dedicated to guitarist Jussi Siglarson. The composition unfolds in three movements:

I. Pizzicato strings and guitar introduce the volcanic landscape.

II. Contemplative layers of bass and strings lead into Jussi’s gentle guitar theme.

III. A reggae-inspired bassline and plucked strings drive urgency before the quartet returns, lifting the track to a cinematic close.

For fans of Sigur Rós, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mogwai, Balmorhea, Explosions in the Sky, Max Richter, Ólafur Arnalds.

This song is for Kathy who, for years, has unknowingly motivated me on the gloomiest of days, with nothing more than a heartfelt smile, positivity, and the occasional engaging conversation. She's lifted my spirits on many of those cold, gray days when I had to be up before the dawn. Even though her fingers are like popsicles, her heart is warm and friendly.  

As for the line, "even with a bump, she finds joy in the pain", there was a time, seems like it was several months, when I didn't see her.  I had heard she had an accident and was concerned.  Was she OK?  When I finally saw her again,  she told me she had slipped, bumped her head and had a concussion. 

But even as she was telling me about it, she smiled and joked about it, as if to say, "No worries. . .I know God's got me."  

This song is just my way of letting her know that I recognize and appreciate her--popsicle fingers, concussion, and all.  In a world full of "Karen's", we could use more "Kathy's"!
