They reached the Salt lake in the late summer heat
They lost some wagons when the mud started to weep

Mr Hastings he was too hasty 
His new route was too dangerous and bold 
And hell followed

Mad about the natives John was pummeling Reed
But Reed pulled his hunting knife and he plunged it real deep
Hardkoop too weary for the pace they would keep
Got left by the trail and that’s the last he was seen

The Paiute raided again down at Humbolt sink
Wolfinger stopped to cache away all of his things
The Wolfingers had riches they weren’t gonna need
So Joseph shot down Karl and left his widow cash free

Mr Hastings he was too hasty 
His new route was too dangerous and bold

They took a break at Truckee Lake in mid November
The snow that fell that night wasn’t due until December
No going forward, there weren’t no turning back 
They had no other choice except to start to set up a camp

It wasn’t long before they run out of food
They ate the dogs, they ate their shoes, they even ate the rug too
Some of the stronger members well they set out for help
But within ten days they started eating themselves

The Indian guides Salvador and Luis
Said man this ain’t natural, ain’t no way we can do this
So the group shot them dead and ate em’ day after Christmas
By then it was normal, they didn’t ask for forgiveness

Back at the camp they didn’t fare too much better
They started eating people once they ran out of leather
The harsh winter span, it had taken a toll 
And when it was over they’d eaten 21 souls

When a rescue party finally reached the undead
They found Lewis Keseberg and they found him well fed
Mrs Donner needed for help for the man that she wed
Mrs Donner looked for help over in the wrong shed

To his new route that was dangerous and bold

Manifest, destiny, drove them from Springfield
Too hungry to ride that Oregon trail
That hunger, it doomed them, to their nightmare ordeal
Because they were destined to fail
