Humpday Happiness With Gibbon Records - Benwaa

Drumcode has become a label synonymous with some of the most-cutting edge and forward-thinking techno over the last 20 years. Their artists include both emerging and established names, and one of those well recognised is Enrico Sangiuliano. Now announcing the very first concept album of his career.

The prolific Italian producer has been catapulted into the limelight after the runaway success of his past releases, and now Biomorph is born. 

A very special concept album designed to take the listener on a journey of evolution. A musical adaptation describing how biological and technological advances over numerous generations of time have all started from the same first step in our own biological journey.

Divided into 4 parts, Organisms opens with atmospheric tones, gradually blending complex textures and timbres to begin the evolutional process. The beginning of this section combines full sounding arrangements before stripping it all back to basics. From here it dissolves into the atmosphere. Organisms then progresses into a break-beat influenced, down tempo track using synths to add complexity to the straight, broken rhythms.

Galactic, futuristic elements are found in both tracks in Cosmic Forces. Upbeat, groovy, electronic synths resonate, before ‘Hidden T’ brings the tension to get things pumped up with stratospheric swirls and twirls to lay down one of the most mind meltingly deep drops.

Metamorphosis is mysterious, its opening beat is a deep and piercing tone that sends the listener into a sensory awareness of their surroundings before breaking into a fully charged, techno track, with Enrico’s trademark sounds and textures.

All evolution has an ending.

Two Probabilities shows the positive, starting out evocative and emotional, with a gentle harmony, gazing towards a ‘New Dawn’. On the other side of the spectrum lies the negative. This is influenced with a rhythm that articulates the beat of death, mathematical, cold and metallic in texture, it shows the unsustainability of its nature, with a hectic, anxious break beat influenced ending.

Benwaa, Strange. 
Driving, direct FX'd Tech house. 
Despite the title, there is nothing too strange about how focussed at the dancefloor this track is, a driving bass flows beneath technoid percussives all laced with an atmosphere that's somewhat otherworldly.

Drew Miller is on remix duties and present something quite evolved yet tasty flavour of the original entwined in its vibe. Drawing out an uplifting and tension enticing energy, Drew crafts his own strange path of dancfloor groove.

B-side Develop shows no letup in the aim for the floor, a heavy, bassy, kick drum powers the track from the off. Leading into the edge of acidic territory without ever teetering over the precipice, Develop does what its title intends. Unfolding into a hypnotic all encompassing build into peak time moments.

Chris Nord with his exemplary ear for movement, adds his own special edge to the proceedings, without straying too far from the original he expertly and deftly Develops a remix that has an extra edge, a certain groovy-ness akin to Chris' inimitable style.

In short: perfect stuff for the floor. A fact clearly reflected in Teenage Mutants’ presence in the charts of leading music platforms such as Beatport. Here, the duo scored a first big break with ‘Hanging On’, produced in collaboration with Andre Crom back in 2012: without hesitation the track went straight to #1 in the overall charts. Since then, Teenage Mutants have collaborated with an impressive collection of respected artists – Purple Disco Machine, Moonbootica, Laura Welsh, Betoko and Jonas Saalbach are just a few of the names they have shared a studio with, while remixes for Nervo feat. Kylie Minogue, Jake Shears & Nile Rogers, Autograf, Sailor & I, Third Son or Ed One further shows just how extensive their network is.

Naturally, Teenage Mutants’ endless passion for electronic music translates to their DJ-performances. Next to a former residency at La Terrrazza in Barcelona and the current night Verboten in their hometown Mainz, the guys are a regular fixture at key clubs and festivals on the underground circuit, performing multiple gigs a week all over the world. In recent years Teenage Mutants have thus travelled from Johannesburg to Moscow, Paris to Hollywood, Miami to Berlin, Rome to São Paulo or Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur. No journey is ever too far to spread the word. They are named after superheroes, after all.

Acutek brings his first solo E.P. on Gibbon with a very direct and twisted up technoid focused journey. No Salt, More Pepper drives from the depths from the very off, leading us into a very spacey and almost psychedelic atmosphere all underpinned by techno roots. 
Chris Johnson follows this up with his very different take that leads us on what initially appears to be a more mellow journey before he unleashes those jet engines of techno at us full throttle, driving energy interspersed with chordal moods, the twisted psychedelia and hints and touches of the original.

Backing these up is AA side, Transport. 
Acutek shows his darker and more introspective side, the bubbling nature of Transport coupled with its serpentine like overtones that carry us along its ever subtly changing steps to the journeys end.
Carl Higson provides the remix for Transport and he changes things up into his own inimitable vibe. A progressive house force is extracted from the tanks of the original and layered wonderfully with acid motion and depth, turning corners you that bring something altogether alive and of its own whilst still conveying the overtones of the original.
