London, Manchester, Vancouver: BZ in the Mix for Ruf Kutz - PARTY THIS FRIDAY IN MANCHESTER!

Over the past 22 years I have been recording & adding to a mixtape series begun in 1998 in San Francisco. I started putting together selections from the deeper, “late night” end of my record collection that almost never made their way onto regular DJ mixtapes we were all making in the late nineties. Back in the day before Uber, all those after-hours minicab rides in London were sound tracked by African & Caribbean pirate radio stations playing the most incredible Downtempo Soul, R&B, Roots and Gospel. For me, the better the DJ, the slower BPM they would have the guts to play. And here in London even today, generally speaking, the blacker the party, the slower the music (and inevitably, the hotter the vibes)…a simple equation really. This 40 hours worth of music features tracks from every genre and every era……the only thing they all have in common is that they would sound pretty dam good at 8am Sunday morning in the back of a minicab on Coldharbour Lane.

Jackie House is the alter-ego of Jacob Sperber one of the founding members of Honey Soundsystem. She has been a fixture on the San Francisco dance-music circuit for the last decade alongside touring the world with her buddies in the Honey crew. Aside from a speckling of singles, remixes, and mixtapes, Jacob runs the Honey Soundsystem record label alongside the now defunct Discaire Records. Part archivist, part activist he has used his various outlets to celebrate the rich history of dance-music and to fight for equality.

THE MIX:
Growing up in California in the days of turntablism and IDM I never thought the day would come that the two would align and with such incredible results. This mix is as much an homage to the day I moved 3 blocks from the apartment DJ Shadow made Entroducing to the day my CD copy of Oval - Systemisch got a scratch in it from repeated listens. From Soulection to Daybre to Q-Tip, I strung together this 70 minute mix with a lot of disparate compadre in mind. A friendship letter of sorts to a crew of people who all now live in far-off places but will certainly think of each other when they take the trip down this recording. 

Drowning in a 124 BPM world, making this mix was like a year of yoga on my ears.

The duo were seen ducking in and out of the shadows of Berlin's most infamous clubs, before they finally found their home in the mysterious, Salon - Zur wilden Renate. Today, Peak helms the responsibilities of head booker while The Swift takes care of the one-of-a-kind flyer art and bookings of his own, while the pair simultaneously bang out hot tracks every weekend as residents. 

Together they have helped Renate grow from a club in its infancy to the world-renowned underground mecca it has become today, boasting incredible house, techno and disco lineups on a weekly basis, not to mention a series of open-air events and many wild themed parties throughout the year. For those of you who don't know Peak and Swift yet, it might be best for you to hop a plane to Berlin and catch them in their element in Zur wilden Renate, you will surely not be disappointed. Also, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for releases from the label they recently formed, Renate Schallplatten!

Each appearance marks an invitation made to someone we hold dear because their art conveys such power and meaning that have a specific and special place in this series, as well as their music has in our minds, bodies and hearts. So, regardless of their renown or following, they are all very welcome and their presence is deeply appreciated and cherished. Still, some puts us in awe, not for what they did, but for what they keep on doing so passionately as this one we are very glad to present here. A DJ for the dancers and from the dancers who, as it is expected, deploys rhythms with our bodies in his mind and delivers moods with our souls in his heart. Joey Anderson does that with the simplicity and generosity of those rare talents who seems and feels himself more as a part of a community of music lovers than a personality among thrill seekers. And what is all that other than the perfect prologue for the weekend ahead, whenever it may be?

GIDEÖN has a background in music spanning 33 years. In addition to his studio practice as a recording artist, his work as a creative director, stage designer and curator, he is also a touring DJ and an avid collector of vinyl. Since his first set of turntables in 1990, GIDEÖN has devoted his life to collecting vinyl from the US, Jamaica, Latin America, Africa, and the UK. He specialises in Northern Soul, Latin, Reggae, Gospel, and Disco rarities. House Music, above all else, is his first and greatest love. 

He is currently Creative Director of a new opera being developed in partnership with English National Opera. He has a degree in Music with Visual Practice (BA Hons) and was guest Creative Director of Music for London Borough of Culture 2022. Recent projects have seen Gideon head up Creative Direction for Dua Lipa’s record breaking Studio 2054, winning the MVA’s Music Video of The Year award. He was production designer for lead artists at Live at Worthy Farm, Glastonbury’s virtual festival livestream. 

As a curator, he programmed two events for Chaka Khan’s Meltdown Festival in summer 2024 and is currently Head of Music at The Roof Gardens in London. Other projects include work with Anohni, Banksy, Imperial War Museum, Finnish Opera House, Hercules & Love Affair, Lana Del Ray, Skrillex, Brian Eno, Roisin Murphey, The Blessed Madonna, Honey Dijon, and Jorja Smith.

GIDEÖN co-founded, co-directs and curates Block9’s festival nightlife institutions The NYC Downlow, Genosys, Maceo’s and IICON at Glastonbury Festival. He is also resident and co-booker at London’s hottest queer club night Adonis. As a radio DJ, GIDEÖN has been actively involved in broadcasting for over three decades. Since cutting his teeth on London’s pirate stations in the late nineties, he hosted a weekly show on London’s Soho Radio for 3 years. Recent guest appearances include New York’s Beats In Space, London’s Rinse FM, NTS Radio and BBC 6 Music. He recently held a residency at BBC Radio 1.

GIDEÖN has been involved in political activism his entire life and is now increasingly focussed on organising hybrid cultural-political events partnering music and protest, often under the banner of R3 Soundsystem. Together with charities Love Music Hate Racism & Stand Up To Racism, GIDEÖN has organised major sound system interventions on many of the Stop Brexit and Stop Trump and Anti-Fascism protests. He is actively involved with fundraising for several LGBTQ+, human rights and social justice organisations including AllOut, Medical Aid For Palestinians, Prepster, Human Dignity Trust and Refugee Community Kitchen. GIDEÖN sits on the advisory committee for The Right to Dance, part of War Child’s NGO Network.

R3 Soundsystem is a consortium of DJs, musicians, producers, record labels, festivals, nightclubs, sound systems, activists, and cultural organisations, all united by love of music and the rejection of right-wing nationalist values. R3’s three Rs stand for RESIST/REJECT/REVOLT.

GIDEÖN’s House Music label HOMO-CENTRIC RECORDS launched to showcase both his solo productions and collaborations with close queer comrades. The label focusses on the LGBTQ+ heritage of House and attempts to pay homage to its lost heroes. Its manifesto states the intent to re-establish the lines of queer musical tradition at the heart of House, lost to AIDS and the capitalist desecration of dance music itself.
