okno, okno, okno (2023)

The so-called “number stations” are shortwave radio broadcasts whose only purpose is to transmit encoded messages in the form of a series of numbers, words, and other patterns of audio signals. These transmissions, which have been reported for over a century and are still in use today, are believed to carry sensitive information to intelligence officers operating in foreign countries. With the use of cryptographic techniques such as one-time pads, agencies can securely transmit messages that are virtually undecipherable by anyone other than their intended recipient. As a result, for anyone else, the patterns in these signals carry no information and are completely indistinguishable from pure randomness.

okno, okno, okno is a four-part multichannel electroacoustic work that explores such broadcasts, some of which date back from the Cold War period, while others were intercepted during the time of its composition. Composed by processing these shortwave sources through an analogue synthesiser, this piece employs algorithmic looping techniques coupled with some improvisational elements. It thus offers a window into these mysterious signals that constantly surround us and uses repetition as a method for both exploring and deconstructing them.

SUN takes the listener through three distinctive spaces - inside the explosive and scorching sun, across the rain of protons to the wavy aurora. The material of the piece is based on sonified data from observations of solar activity, near-surface turbulence and particle flux in space.

This is a recording of a performance using a MAX patch I made throughout the months and performed with three times, most notably earlier this year on Sound Kitchen as part of PQ 2023.

Chord to be repeated as fast as possible until it's physically impossible and painful to play further.

Lines have been recorded while listening to others, therefore you can hear little "waves" of energy emerging, similar to how friends would support each other through struggles. The purer and more consonant it is, the more agonizing it is in the background.

Strings are doubling the piano parts and apart from tiny changes, there were no edits made to the midi.

Struggling to Breathe is a piece for 2 Disklaviers, one detuned by a 1/4 tone. The piece was inspired by a 4-day stay in a quarantined hospital room for an abscess in my left lung. The detuned Disklavier is my metaphorical "broken" lung. Throughout the piece the two Disklaviers never quite get in sync except for a number of disruptive outbursts...just like the incessant coughing I that resulted from infected lung.

Scott D. Miller is a New York City-based composer and Artistic Director of the Tilted Head Ensemble, which he founded in 2016. Miller has written extensively for various classical ensembles and has long explored diverse genres. He has composed musique concrète, electroacoustic music, experimental jazz, structured improvisation and works in collaboration with poets, dramatists and visual artists.
 
Miller's works have been performed at MISE-EN, La MaMa, Symphony Space, The Knitting Factory, Roulette, CBGB, P.S. 122, Lincoln Center Library, The DiMenna Center and many other venues. His music has been premiered by Miranda Cuckson, Blair McMillen, Ryan Muncy, Eric Huebner, Fred Ho and other notable performers.
 
Miller studied composition with Milton Babbitt and Paul Lansky, as well as clarinet with David Krakauer. A graduate of Oberlin Conservatory, Miller also earned an MFA in composition from Princeton University and an MA in music education from Teachers College, Columbia University.

He has received numerous awards and grants including ASCAP, NJSCA, Meet the Composer and the New York Composers Circle Award.
 
Starting in 1989, Miller founded and directed the Inner Ear Music Series at the Brecht Forum and at Greenwich House in New York City, producing over seventy concerts of new music by many prominent experimental composers and improvisers.

I'm a Brazilian composer based in London and I hold a PhD in Music from City, University of London. I work mainly with algorithmic music and my research interests include automatic generation of scores, musical repetition, perception, mapping techniques, and generative techniques in general.
