There’s no right or wrong way to do life, there are just pros and cons; on a late drive back from a gig through the city lights of London, I was going through these crazy fantasies in my head of the big urban life. This new euphoric upbeat track is dedicated to all those waiting for the right time to leap out into the crazy urban city landscape, and the right time matters now more than ever...

‘Why Do We Lose Them?’ is a dark, ethereal, moody indie-pop track that was written last year from the perspective of a hypothetical situation; how I would feel going through a relationship to find that depression and spiralling thoughts of ending it all would get the better of the one person you love.

Inspired by a disturbing nightmare that I couldn’t shake off without writing about, this song takes an open look at how fragile people can be behind their public image. The truth of how someone who you may think is playing a victim for attention, is actually crying out for help.

This song is a tribute to anyone who has lost somebody by the grip of depression. Coming from someone who has been in dark places, I wanted to write about the way I’d feel if someone close to me became swallowed by the black dog. It’s so important that we help people who are going through troubling times and support charities like MIND, OCD UK, CALM, Samaritans and many others. These will help more people survive and flourish.

Why Do We Lose Them?

Giles Stelfox is an indie artist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based in Reading, UK; his unique sound fuses hard hitting indie-rock guitars, live drums and lush synth pop soundscapes topped with his heartfelt lyrical stories of romance, obsession, euphoria and self-reflection. Giles self produces all his records and recreates them live using his spectacular live looping show, challenging the very definition of live performance. 

Giles was a semi-finalist at The Pilton Stage, Glastonbury Emerging Talent competition in 2022, performing in front of music industry legends inc. Michael Eavis (Glastonbury Festival founder). His  ’Live at Studio 91 Sessions' were showcased by  virtual festival ‘VOxjam’ in 2021. “An ingenious artist who manages to flesh out his pop songs with just himself and his own wizardry" - Shaun Keaveny, BBC Radio 6. 

He started his solo career in 2018, establishing his sound and style with singles 'Your Intentions' and 'Heart You Hide', produced by Platinum-selling producer, Sam Winfield (Studio 91). In 2020, he released personal favourites 'You Talk Dirty With Wine' and 'Why Do We Lose Them?'.

After a songwriting hiatus, he resumed work on new music in 2023 after performing as a covers musician in bars and clubs across the UK. Over 200 gigs later, Giles rediscovered his desire to write again.  Inspired by  artists ‘Glass Animals’, ‘Foals’ & ‘The 1975’,  Giles'  huge new rock meets indie-disco track ‘Give Me Tonight’ is out NOW.
