The room was effectively a perfect Disco - a beautifully tuned soundsystem, plenty of mirror-balls and a 'Soul Train'-esq decor.

In 1995 I passed on a mix tape to Groove Academy (Giant Step) Marc Labelle at an outdoor stage that was rocking with DJ's Jazzy Nice, Chillfreeze + Groove Collective & Nappy G live. They soon took me on as a 3rd DJ in the weekly rotation of the legendary Giant Step parties. The club vibes were HOT! There was a mix of hip hop, jazz, funk, live instrumentation, paintings, tap dancers as well as a very funky & sexy dance floor! Needless to say, I was hooked & thanks to Marc, Maurice Bernstein & Jonathan Rudnick, I stayed in the Giant Step crew for many years after. We pushed the sounds from Acid Jazz/funk, Hip Hop/Trip Hop, House & Drum & Bass- all with live musicians taking it to another level. I've also had the opportunity to DJ at shows for Jazzmattazz, Tricky, K&D, St Germain, Pharcyde, Groove Collective, Massive Attack, Gil Scott Heron & all the greats who passed through NYC at that time. Here's the 1st mix-tape I did for Giant Step in 1995. The new edition of Late Night Tales journeys to Scandinavia to invite Norwegian duo Röyksopp to delve through their record collection. Their Late Night Tales mix is eclectic, diverse and wonderful. Sliding from light folk to widescreen ambience to experimental rock to prog-pop (seasoned with the occasional guilty pleasure); it’s all in the spirit of the night.

Following the exclusive introduction track 'Daddy's Groove', Rare Bird's beautiful 1975 B-side'Passing Through' then leads into Australian supergroup Little River Band. The first of several delicate folk moments, it's joined by the ever soulful John Martyn. There's a strong representation of alternative European sounds. Röyksopp mine deep and wide to unearth the rare and unusual German psych-pop of Richard Schneider Jnr (featuring none other than Can's Jaki Leibezeit on drums), France's unique F.R. David and the new age melodies of Switzerland's Andreas Vollenweider - it's pop Jim, but not as we know it. There are also the more familiar names of XTCand Thomas Dolby, as well as Röyksopp's exclusive cover of Depeche Mode's 'Ice Machine' and brand new track opening Daddys Groove. The music draws to a close with goth-dream-pop 4ADfounders The Mortal Coil's Emmylou Harris cover 'Till I Can Gain Control Again'; blending into a cinematic moment from German electronic avant-garde band Popol Vuh, contributing to the soundtrack of Werner Herzog's 1972 movie Aguirre, the Wrath of God. The second part of theBenedict Cumberbatch narrated story 'Flat of Angles' closes time on this coolly individual edition of Late Night Tales.

Late Night Tales: Röyksopp (Mini Mix)

Epic Vinyls from Brazil are Rasmus and Dona Carla from Copenhagen and Rio de Janeiro.

If you don't know them yet, their DJ Set are made up of exceptional, rare Brazilian music that you have probably never heard before (except for the specialists that you may be).
They have been digging for one year to make another mix on Le Mellotron dedicated the Brazilian goddess of the sea: Iemanjá.
From a pool of 30 themed records, they selected 16 highly danceable MPB (popular Brazilian music) rarities made to celebrate life and good music.
Iemanjá is celebrated on February 2nd all over Brazil and connected to blue and white colors, rivers and oceans, white flowers, love and cleansing.

This name of this mix is ABOM-5. The 5th mixtape in their Afro Brazil Orixa Mix series - which traces the influence of african rhytms and spirituality in Brazilian music. Major MPB artists from Rio like Wando and Elza Soares are mixed with tracks from Bahia, Belem and São Paulo.
