Following the passing of jazz legend Yusef Lateef in December, Gilles went through the innovator's extensive back-catalogue going all the way back to the 1950s, pulling out some of his personal favourite tracks. Here is part one of Gilles' tribute mix, celebrating the life and music of the mighty Yusef Lateef.

This third installment of DJ Margeir Ingólfsson’s acclaimed Blue Lagoon Soundtrack continues the tradition of capturing the relaxing and otherworldly atmosphere of the Blue Lagoon in a flawless mix of eclectic electronic gems. Known both at home and abroad as Iceland’s premier DJ, Margeir strikes a unique tone with tracks ranging from 1960s Icelandic classics through to brand new and exclusive unreleased material. DJ Margeir is the Golden Calf making sacrifices on the sonic altar for the lost hordes. Margeir is one half of Gluteus Maximus and a founding father of Radio Bongo, from the mighty Kompakt stable - alongside friend and collaborator President Bongo. As a club DJ, Margeir has circled the globe laying down the gospel since the early ‘90. DJ Margeir and his Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Samuel Samuelsson and featuring members of the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, takes audiences on an aural adventure they’re not likely to forget. Margeir’s Blue Lagoon baptisms are legendary, his water-borne party sets ferrying crowds to an otherworldly land of musical plenty. The first of his acclaimed Blue Lagoon Soundtracks went gold. Gluteus Maximus is Iceland's President Bongo and DJ Margeir. Masterminds of the Reykjavik-based events company Jón Jónsson, these dysfunctional digital artists have jockeyed their disks all over the planet, playing everywhere from Pacha to The End, armed with a combined remix list verging on the offensive - Björk, Trentmøller and Sigur Rós to name but a few. Their original hit single “Everlasting”, featuring the magnificent vocals of Högni Egilsson, heralded the birth of their own label, Radio Bongo. Both at home and abroad Margeir and The President are a supernatural institution. They’re an arsenal of rotating musical mass with a live freak show that shouldn’t be missed.

Welcome visitor to a brandnew edition of my Quiet Dawn mixtape series focusing on ...Folk Psych Funk.
As the 1960s melted into the ’70s in a colourful swirl of musical possibility, bands and singer-songwriters were experimenting with newfound freedoms. The psychedelic era had brought about many changes and much political upheaval in its wake. Discrete genres became fluid. Many acts fused different sounds together. Rock would meet jazz. Soul was mixed with psychedelia. In this fecund environment the nebulous yet highly prized form of folk funk emerged.

In what’s become a goldmine for crate-digging hip-hop and electronic music producers, keen to find an obscure and funky sample not yet rinsed out or carrying the threat of litigation, folk funk is a blend of acoustic guitars, looping repetitive grooves, jazz touches and full fat drum breaks.

You hear classics of the genre from Kenny Rankin or Terry Callier ,rare new discoveries by Quiet World or Kathi Smith and a killer new psychedelic take on the afro samba classic canto de lemanya.

Italian trio Casa del Mirto have been around for the past ten years, only recently evolving from a dancey project into something a whole lot more chilled out and atmospheric. Making synthy sounds to sit and think to, their new music is intimate and undeniably beautiful. Taken from their upcoming album Still (due for release on January 26th via @GhostRecords) i-D are pleased to present the premiere of Reflex. Opening with a repetitive stabbing synth reminiscent of a recent Les Sins track, Reflex layers minimalist percussion over sweet piano chords before soaring strings carry the track to another level. Ascoltare bene!

I also hear new stuff that I hadn’t noticed before when I listen to his music - the track with Jack Wilson that opens the mix up is so heavy and cosmic for its time, and I’d forgotten about the track with Wayne Henderson! There are so many great albums out there including the 2 Virgin Ubiquities BBE put out... We could devote a whole week of radio programmes to Roy, his archive is so large… 

He is the key to all things between jazz, soul, disco and hip hop…. Thank you roy for all the music...
