For our 905th RA Podcast, we're proud to welcome Goldie, one of the most famous, talented and important electronic music artists of all time. Starting out as a graffiti artist, he eventually made music under the name Rufige Kru, helping push the then-nascent genre of jungle forward with tracks like "Krisp Biscuit (Power)" and "Terminator." The latter was released under the name Metalheads, which would later become the name of his label (with a z instead of an s). Metalheadz—which he cofounded with DJ Storm and the late Kemistry—celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and remains the defining outlet of drum & bass, the genre that grew out of jungle that Goldie helped invent with records like 1995's massive crossover album Timeless (alongside countless other classics). He's a producer, DJ, actor and all-around celebrity, a huge personality in UK electronic music.

Goldie is also RA's guest curator this month, and his tenure starts with this mix. We'll have more to come starting this week—check our editor's letter later today for more information—but for now, here's a survey of drum & bass past and present from a man who helped invent the genre. With plenty of new Metalheadz material plus a healthy dose of older tracks, these two hours lay out the history of Metalheadz, drum & bass and its various subgenres, from twinkling liquid to rumbling techstep. It's the first part of a month celebrating Goldie's legacy, and we can't wait to show you the rest.

GILONE, originally from Guadeloupe, is best known as an international model. She self-produced her first EP, Ocean Call in 2019 in Paris. Her song writing has developed over the last 10 years while travelling all over the world modeling. 
Somewhere between aerial electronic beats, alternative pop and movie music, GILONE creates overlays of vocal harmonies - sometimes minimalist, often very organic with underwater sounds. Her DNA comes from this creative process, between accidents, spontaneity and superimposed voices.

Née en Guadeloupe, Virginie Lentulus, mannequin d’origine franco-cubaine-indienne, se lance dans la musique sous le nom de GILONE.

Après des années de danse et d’études en art visuel, GILONE franchit en 2018 la frontière vers la pure création, forte de talents acquis ou développés au cours de nombreux voyages à travers le monde : écriture,  composition musicale, direction artistique.  

Influencée par Bjork, Max Richter ou Massive Attack, elle bâtit au fil de morceaux singuliers son univers électro-dream pop planant chargé d'émotions. 

Rythmées de voix répétitives, ses mélodies lyriques gorgées de sonorités abyssales sont inspirées par le monde sous-marin. Adepte des superpositions sonores, GILONE écrit, compose et autoproduit aujourd’hui son premier EP, « Ocean Call », en partie avec le compositeur Yvan Ginoux, ancien collaborateur de Rone. Il a l’innocence et la fraîcheur des premières fois, jusque dans sa production, dans ses compositions.

Ici, GILONE module sa voix—charmeuse, éthérée, aérienne, précise ou ferme—comme si elle en apprivoisait toutes les nuances en temps réel. Son écriture ne fourmille pas d’onomatopées ou de name dropping, mais GILONE joue avec les mots, manie les assonances avec une curiosité enfantine. Ces morceaux parsemés d’émotions révèlent un regard, une vision. Comme si elle décrivait le réel depuis une autre longueur d’onde. Cette image de rêveuse aérienne est toutefois imparfaite, et chaque morceau bouscule l’impression initiale de l’auditeur.

Naviguant entre beats électroniques éthérés, musique alternative, avant-garde pop, refrains catchy ou paysages cinématographiques, GILONE manie effets et réverbération pour nous faire voyager. Parfois minimalistes, toujours organiques, ses pulsations musicales nous emmènent vers les profondeurs des abysses. Fruits d’accidents conservés et d’une spontanéité affutée, ses créations, marquées par l’eau, ses formes, ses bruits, ses mouvements, son côté imprévisible, rassurent et inquiètent à la fois.

« Ocean Call » s’ouvre sur Run. Composé à Biarritz, Run aborde la question du lâcher prise pendant la pandémie. Cette fuite en avant électronique est accompagnée d’un clip cinématographique et théâtral réalisé par Hamadou Frédéric Baldé et scénarisé par GILONE. Un investissement visuel naturel puisque GILONE, multicartes, chante, danse, s'occupe de sa direction artistique et produit ses clips vidéos en indépendante. Puis débarque le single Fight. Martial, grandiloquent, ce « combat » s’adoucit grâce aux choeurs éthérés.
