AGAINST FUTURISM (Part 1)
 
What does it mean to write on "THE FUTURE" (all caps and in quotations)?
Is it even possible?
And, if so, is it possible to act (in italics) on the future?
The problem with the future—like the problem with the past—
is that it does not exist
We all know this
The only time it ever is--it ever can be--
is now
It is always now

How does it feel to be here?
To be “really here”?
One cannot describe experience without
dwelling on the past
One cannot prescribe experience without asserting the present;
Then a document becomes a score, time passes,
And the past becomes the future
Becomes the past

The human perception of experience encompasses all three:
Present, Past and Future (title case)
Past experiences and future anxieties crowd around the experienced present, like identical triplets
Inseparable yet insecure
Cuddled together in the crib,
Yet never touching
My old composition professor once said that,
for human beings,
what we consider "a moment"
is a window of time that lasts approximately seven to eight seconds
[wait seven to eight seconds]
There
Did we all have a moment?
This window of the moment
is slippery
is always sliding forward with us through the inevitability of motion
of things changing
of time marking itself
To be is to be in time
Like the cursor in Garage Band that 
moves through the score from left to right
tied exactly to the forward advance of the composition
But it isn't just doing that, is it?
The marker has a tendency to be in place; in one place, specifically;
It’s tendency is always toward center
If one begins to "play the score” and the cursor is at a position that is "behind the moment" (in quotations), the cursor will leap forward--left to right--catch up, and take its place in the center of the computer screen
If the cursor is "ahead of the moment", 
it will leap backward--right to left--to find its equilibrium in the exact center of the musical moment that is audibly happening
Even fucking Garage Band gets it; that the position of experience in the elastic tug-of-war of beingness...

Futurism is a problematic endeavor
Has always been
Take the zone of entertainment at Southern California’s Disneyland known as “Tomorrowland”
An abstraction from Wikipedia says:
Walt Disney was known for his futurist views and, through his television programs, showed the American public how the world was moving into the future. Tomorrowland was the realized culmination of his views. In his own words: "Tomorrow can be a wonderful age. Our scientists today are opening the doors of the Space Age to achievements that will benefit our children and generations to come. The Tomorrowland attractions have been designed to give you an opportunity to participate in adventures that are a living blueprint of our future.” It is this movement into the future that has, on occasion, left Tomorrowland mired in the past.
Walt Disney’s problem is our problem;
is the problem of design and technology’s ever-failing negotiation with time
In order to stay current (even if currency is believed to be the reflection of a projected “future”)
We must remain in a permanent state of updatedness
Constant updates now and forever
Any object that attempts to embody the future--

GINA PERFORMA NOV 4

This work is inspired by the “Four Seasons” poems by Li Bai of the Tang Dynasty.
 “Spring” is a sweet lament expressing the sentiment of a young woman: while calmly plucking mulberry and admiring the beautiful landscape in early spring, she sadly watches the departure of their loved ones going to war. “Summer” communicates optimism through the sunny portrayal of blooming lotus in a lake: she awaits effortlessly in a boat, but can only catches a glimpse at the royal house afar. “Autumn” depicts the yearning heart of a young woman: under the moonlight and feeling the soft blow of autumn wind, she laments the passing of time and wishes the safe return of her loved one from war. “Winter” describes an anxious woman sewing a winter coat late at midnight: she dreams the coat will be sent to her husband, keeping him warm and safe from the brutal winter wind in a war zone.
The vocal line captures the bleak but romantic poetic essence of the stories. The piano accompaniment is written in a dramatic manner, coloristic and dynamic. Music evolves from the lyrical and impressionistic figures in “Spring”, to the intense and angular gestures in “Winter”. The centered voice of a female character reminiscences elements of Kunqu opera, an old form of Chinese opera of passionate and melodious character. 
The track features soprano Katy Clark with pianist Denise Jung, who sung beautifully in Mandarin.

SUMMER

On Mirror Lake outspread for miles and miles, 
The lotus lilies in full blossom teem. 
In fifth moon Xi Shi gathers them with smiles, 
Watchers o'erwhelm the bank of Yuoye Stream. 
Her boat turns back without waiting moonrise 
To royal house amid amorous sighs.

AUTUMN

A slip of the moon hangs over the capital; 
Ten thousand washing-mallets are pounding; 
And the autumn wind is blowing my heart 
For ever and ever toward the Jade Pass.... 
Oh, when will the Tartar troops be conquered, 
And my husband come back from the long campaign! 

WINTER

The courier will depart next day, she's told. 
She sews a warrior's gown all night. 
Her fingers feel the needle cold. 
How can she hold the scissors tight? 
The work is done, she sends it far away. 
When will it reach the town where warriors stay?
