Lisbon based Batida (AKA Pedro Coquenão) is back with his Afro-house inspired single ‘Pobre e Rico’. Taken from his upcoming album ‘Dois’, the single features samples from a rare Afrobeat groove by Angolan legend Matadidi Mário and lines from the first Angolan movie made back in the 1970s.

In 2012 Batida’s explosive self-titled debut came out on Soundway Records. Mixing the syncopated rhythms of Kuduro with elements of 1970s Semba, Pedro Coquenão won fans for an album that “demanded movement” (The Line of Best Fit) and “gave a view of the old and new, the West and Africa.” (The Guardian)

Inspired by the multicultural hotbed of his home city of Lisbon and trips to Nairobi and Luanda, the new album ‘Dois’ is set for release through Soundway Records on 20th October. Recorded in his own garage-studio over a two-year period, ‘Dois’ features a host of special guests including Spoek Mathambo, Francois and The Atlas Mountains  and Duncan Lloyd (Maximo Park).

The original mix combines elements from many different geographies and sub genres pulling strings at Dancehall, UK Funky and Afrobeat while the remixes bring different palettes to the dance.

I had the beat only: drums, percussion sounds and breaks, and then added a bit of the synth bass to it. I liked the afro-beatish kind of raw sound of those elements and then Milton Gulli of Cacique '97 (@cacique97) - Portugal's leading afro-beat band - came to my mind. I sent him the beat to Maputo, where he now lives, and a few weeks later I was surprised by how much love he put back into his contribution: all the guitars, bass line and synths were played and recorded over the original beat. All I did afterwards was find the perfect vocal sample to complement Milton's input. I've been playing this track live with my Meu Kamba collective and it's a real banger.

Gingee is a producer, DJ and vocalist from Los Angeles. Her eclectic dance music blends sounds from across the globe, with percussion and vocals. Her live set incorporates diverse elements, from Philippine kulintang gongs, to finger drumming. She has released several EPs and an LP including 2018's "Solstice/Equinox," a four part project corresponding to each season and peppered with collaborations from her travels. She's played the Sahara stage at Coachella, South by Southwest official, Grand Performances, and Levitt Pavilion as well as toured in Europe and Asia. She's been a featured artist on Globalization Sessions (Sirius XM), Red Bull Radio and Arte TV's "Music on the Road" series. She is also the founder of Magic Garage, a community art collective which brings together creatives across cultures, mediums and genres.
