Walking Distance [Feat: The Elephant Frame]

Already heard by 3,000 listeners, "to hold you safe" is an instrumental dream sequence for a theater piece in development. Using soft, echoing piano and subtle noise elements, it evokes the chracter's fractured relationship with his past. As a og envelops the stage, symbolizing the ambiguity of memory, a slow-moving harmonic progression mirrors his search for safety and self-acceptance. The quiet, nostalgic tone of the music, paired with the dissonance of the noise, suggests a broken past—potentially within the family—reinforcing the theme of fractured identity explored in Unfolding: The Art of Connection. As our central figure seeks refuge from the fog of his memories, the piece reflects a broader journey of reconciling one's past and embracing the complexity of self. This short work serves as a quiet, reflective moment, aligning with my project's goal to heal and connect through immersive, interdisciplinary art.

øjeRum "A Certain Grief"

All sounds were recorded at Paw Gabrowski's (øjeRum) his girlfriends parents house. They live remote in the country side and have a really old pump organ in the living room. It's a really old house and in winter they only heat up this room for special occasions. He recorded this two winters ago in freezing cold, with gloves on and candlelights. All background sounds are the actual sounds that were in the house while recording; the creaking chair, the crackling and pumping of the organ, the everyday noises of the family talking and working in the kitchen next door.

Secret Pyramid is the nom de nocturne of Vancouver, BC’s resident ambient explorer Amir Abbey. Having perfected his brand of elegant elegia over the past decade heard on albums released by illustrious imprints as Students of Decay, Ba-Da-Bing!, and Nice Up International and collaborated with the likes of Loscil, Abbey makes his Geographic North debut with 'Embers,' Secret Pyramid’s most sincerely solemn and curiously calming work to date.

Embers’ six pieces find Abbey furroughing a few of his most trusted tools (including Ondes Martenot, sampler, Space Echo, two tape machines, and a computer), while taking a more compositional approach than his past works. This method opened entirely new aural possibilities and allowed Abbey to consider, manipulate, and re-consider each passing tone. The end result is an exquisitely enveloping work of contemporary ambient music that is equally inspired by and spiritually linked to influential French composer Olivier Messiaen, the progenitors of Dub, and a number of ephemeral oddities in between. 

Sonically, 'Embers' reveals some of Secret Pyramid’s most minimal and open works yet. Certain pieces (such as “Pins,” “Particles,” and “Ohms”) employ a single instrument or sound source with only a modicum of manipulation. This “less is more” approach gave each sound actual room to breathe and find a balance of beauty and dissonance, and the magical transition between the two.

Emotionally, the music was created during a particularly turbulent time in Abbey’s life, allowing him to process things musically. In his own words, “It’s a reflection of the impermanent, shifting, and fleeting aspects of our lives, both the good and the bad, that often spark something inside of us. Aspects of our daily existence, and the self (whether our emotions, surroundings, relationships,) that are constantly morphing, disappearing, reappearing, burning out, reigniting, and so forth, metaphorically like flares or embers.”

In 2018 I was recording my piano improvisation
in my friends' suburb house.
It was sunny day, birds were singing
and children were playing outside.

After 2 years
I accidentally came across those recordings
and I felt something.
I continued acting intuitively -
My hands acted independently,
creating tape loops,
which then I use to record this album.

All of the tracks were recorded
on the first take,
in one session,
without any edits.
