As the ceasefire in Gaza holds, the UN and humanitarian partners have massively scaled up assistance and focusing on food, water, health protection and other urgent critical services, says Olga Cherevko from the UN aid coordination office, OCHA, speaking from Gaza on Thursday.

If the international community is able to effectively put in place the ethical and practical guidelines proposed by UNESCO and others, AI has the potential to be an extremely important part of an educator’s toolkit. But the introduction of this technology is just one part of a much wider philosophical discussion about the effectiveness of education in general in a world that many believe is about to upended by increasingly powerful AI-powered applications.
UN News asked Matthew Rascoff, Vice Provost for Digital Education at Stanford University, to give his take on the role of education in today’s world, after a keynote speech on AI and education delivered at UNHQ in late January 2025.

In an AI-enabled world, what is education for?

A reported 500,000 Gazans have returned to northern Gaza since a ceasefire began on 19 January between Hamas and Israel. Here's an update from Jonathan Cricx, Chief of Communications for Palestine for the UN Children’s Fund, (UNICEF), from Deir Al-Balah:
“It was really heartbreaking because we know that those families have been displaced several times in the 15 months of the war, and when I was talking to the children and to the parents, they were saying that they wanted to go back to their houses and if their houses was in rubble, they would prefer to have a tent on those rubble,” he told UN News on Tuesday.

Combatants for Peace, a grassroots organization made up of Palestinian and Israeli peace advocates, has consistently called for dialogue between the two communities for two decades, even during the brutal months of the Gaza war.
Mai Shahin, a Palestinian therapist and Elik Elhanan, a teacher in New York both, at one time, took part in acts of violence. On a visit to UN Headquarters in New York in late January, they told Conor Lennon from UN News that the recent conflict has intensified their belief that communication is the only way to achieve peace.

The latest shipwreck tragedy off the coast of Yemen which claimed the lives of 20 Ethiopian nationals on 18 January is a reminder of the continuing dangers migrants face, at the hands of smuggling networks.

That’s the message from the UN migration agency, IOM, which leads efforts to protect migrants attempting to cross the Red Sea from Africa, often in search of work in the Gulf States.

“This tragedy is a grim reminder of the treacherous conditions migrants endure in their search for safety and a better life,” said Abdusattor Esoev, IOM’s Chief of Mission in Yemen, in response to news that a boat capsized off the coast of Dubab District in Ta’iz Governorate.

The vessel, which was carrying 35 Ethiopian nationals as well as a Yemeni captain and his assistant, set out from Djibouti and sank near Al-Hajjajah in Bani Al-Hakam sub-district.

Despite continued efforts to dismantle smuggling networks and improve safety for migrants, Yemen’s coastal waters remain among the world’s most dangerous.

In 2024 alone, IOM documented more than 60,000 migrant arrivals in Yemen.

Since 2014, the UN agency has recorded 3,435 deaths and disappearances along the so-called Eastern Route, including 1,416 lives lost to drowning.
