With just five years left to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), not a single gender equality target is on track

The finding comes in the Gender Snapshot 2025 issued on Monday by UN Women and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).

Prior to the launch, UN News’s Anshu Sharma spoke to Christine Arab, UN Women’s Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific.

She discusses the report and how women’s groups there are ensuring their voices are heard, including in promoting climate resilience.

Asia-Pacific: Women’s groups keen to cooperate on gender-responsive climate resilience

Five years away from the 2030 deadline, none of the global gender equality targets are on track. From poverty to conflict, the setbacks are staggering. 

According to a new UN report launched on Monday, extreme poverty rates for women and girls have hardly moved in the last five years. 

Data shows that by the year 2030, there will be 351 million women and girls who live in the very worst forms of poverty around the world.

But the report also points to real solutions, and what’s possible when countries invest in women and girls. 

UN News’s Ana Carmo sat down with Sarah Hendriks, Director of the Policy Division at UN Women, to discuss the main findings of the 2025 SDG Gender Snapshot report.

For far too long, ‘poverty has disproportionately had a female face’: UN Women

A UN aid convoy to Gaza City took more than 14 hours to complete as teams were forced onto the overcrowded coastal road — the same route used by civilians fleeing bombardment. The UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs (OCHA) warns that access must be quick, safe and sustained to meet urgent humanitarian needs across the Strip.
“This is by no means rapid access,” said Olga Cherevko, OCHA’s spokesperson for the Occupied Palestinian Territories, after describing how her mission was initially denied, then forced to turn back before finally reaching Gaza City. “People are terrified, fleeing under fire, many on foot with nothing but a mattress or a plastic bag of belongings.”
With operations intensifying, services in the south are overwhelmed and families are setting up tents along the main roads or wandering the streets at night searching for a space to shelter. Aid workers requested alternative routes to ease congestion but received no reply from Israeli authorities.
OCHA is reiterating that humanitarian access must be unfettered and civilians protected, whether they remain in the north or move south, so that life-saving supplies can reach those who need them most.
