Friends Francesca and Tet combined their sessions in this recording. Though their styles are different, their respect for each other’s work create a tight bond. They have played with and learned from Rosan and LJ whom I recorded on my visit last year. They seldom have an opportunity to play together and were happy that this recording was a reason to do so.

Francesca’s concept for her solo session was a sound journey. I felt this was more of a hybrid composition in that it starts off as a meditative piece and transitions to a melodic performance with a handpan and tongue drum which was quite unique. She samples all of her instruments in a single improvised composition which gives a good introduction to the different instruments one may encounter in a sound bath.

Sound Bath Sessions 164: Tet Fojas Bachmann, Francesca DeGuzman Warnke

Fatin was keen on playing outdoor and I thought recording another morning chorus track, this time in Singapore, would be perfect. We met at 4:30 at Fort Canning Park and found a spot at the top of the park in a flat area with tall trees.

Fatin plays metal bowls she bought from Bishal and her style is slow and highly improvised. She has an interior design background so I felt that she would be up for experimentation to try some ideas and concepts during the recordings. We would discuss some ideas before each recording and she would execute them improvising with the bowls. I thought it resulted in a pretty cool three-part composition.

Movement
For this recording, we experimented with using the bowls in the space. Fatin would walk around the microphone at varying distances playing the bowl in her hand, playing with depth and movement, creating a dynamic sound experience. Each sound seemed alive.

Sound Bath Sessions 166: Fatin Zulkefly

After several months of working at a desk editing and uploading SBS to Insight Timer, I was glad to be recording again. Tata invited me to record her and her friend Donna in the Peak area. The weather was warm, and the view of the south side of HK was beautiful. Donna has been a practitioner for several years and travels to China to give sessions, too.

The first track was recorded outside next to a pool with a water feature providing a dynamic backdrop for Donna’s solo drum session. Donna’s drum has a harmonic that sounds like a voice, not unlike how a monochord sings. Her constant tempo and rhythm are kept for over 10 minutes until she slows down and changes to a slow, heartbeat rhythm. I hear several harmonics humming between the drum strikes in a wonderful ensemble of sounds. She finishes with a shaker and chimes as it fades into the sounds of the waterfall.

Tata invited me to record her and her friend Donna in the Peak area. The weather was warm, and the view of the south side of HK was beautiful. Donna has been a practitioner for several years and travels to China to give sessions, too.

We went inside to record these last two duets. Donna played her drum, and Tata was on her new, large Gongland gong. This track was an amazing track because the feeling of it was so visceral. Donna started the track with her drumming as Tata slowly drifted in with the gong, eventually swallowing the sounds of the drum, making it barely heard under the weight of sound. 

It sounded like putting an ear to someone’s chest and listening to their faint heartbeat underneath their skin and breathing. Touch being my primary ‘love language’, it was moving to me that a sound bath could evoke such a nostalgic, human experience that symbolizes connection and… touch.

After several months of working at a desk editing and uploading SBS to Insight Timer, I was glad to be recording again. Tata invited me to record her and her friend Donna in the Peak area. The weather was warm, and the view of the south side of HK was beautiful. Donna has been a practitioner for several years and travels to China to give sessions, too.

For the last recording, Donna played the singing bowls, and Tata switched to a smaller titanium gong. The pairing was perfect as the higher harmonics of the gong matched with the tones of the metal bowls. The tempo of the session was slow and calmer. Abstract. Eventually, the gong fills the space, and Donna's delicate playing accompanies the gong's harmonics. Tata's playing was never too dominant throughout the session, playing just enough to create the harmonics for Donna to play with. 

Such a wonderful improvised duet that balanced the two instruments to create a single sound.
