As kids we ate danger for our mid-morning snack.

Playgrounds

I tied the box with tape. 
The sound of the tape being pulled was
The only noise in the apartment. 
I placed the box near the door, 
Exactly where you left yours when you left.

Then, you broke your toy 
And threw it out the door. 
But what you didn't realize is that, 
By throwing it away, 
You also got rid of the only person holding 
The ends of the house of cards together.

I took a deep breath. The air was still heavy, 
But my lungs were working.
I looked at the empty room. 
There was nothing left to look forward to. 
The old world wasn't coming back. 
I picked up the broom and started sweeping up 
The invisible shards that remained on the floor. 
I wasn't going to rebuild the house of cards. 
This time, I was going to build something 
That wouldn't fall apart with a gust of wind.

I closed the door behind me, 
Leaving the box outside. 
The day of disassembling was over. 
Now it was time to walk.
