Dorothy Townshend née Walpole was wife of Foreign Secretary ‘Turnip’ Townshend of Raynham and sister of Sir Robert Walpole of Houghton, Britain’s first PM. She is said to haunt both these halls and surrounding lonely lanes in the brown brocade dress she wore in life, hence 'The Brown lady'. Walpole famously observed that Townsend was happy when ‘the family firm was Townsend and Walpole’ but much less so when it became ‘Walpole and Townsend’. Dorothy died on March 29 1726 (under George I) but was famously photographed haunting the staircase at Raynham Hall on September 19 1936 (during the brief, dubiously affiliated and abdicated reign of Edward VIII.)
