Denni Kindred, the chart-topping producer and DJ who goes by the name of Longstocking, is back on her chart-topping label, Feral One Records, with a new collaborative single that demonstrates the level of talent and intuition that makes her music so in demand.
The new single is entitled “Smile & Wave” and with it, she welcomes the celebrated Vietnamese house music talent, D-Tek, into the fold. With prior releases on numerous impressive imprints like Box of Cats, IN/ROTATION, House of Hustle, and Country Club Disco, D-Tek is a perfect addition to the Feral One roster, bringing the sense of fluidity and exploration that embodies the Seattle scene Kindred seeks to honor with Feral One.
The sound of “Smile & Wave” commemorates that city with its inherent duality. One of the rainiest cities in the world, Seattle can come off as dark and broody, but the culture there is warm and accepting of all people, no matter how they may define themselves.
That sense of acceptance comes out both literally and figuratively in the original mix. From the spoken lyrics that match the title in the dulcet voice of a pure-hearted youth to the hopeful melodic lines existing in sonic form somewhere between a glockenspiel and a piano; qualitatively dreamy and grounded in authenticity. Like an invitation to house heaven.
Then the drop comes and instantly you know that even though you were invited into heaven, if you fuck up the vibes for everyone else, your ass is getting canned back to hell. The drums and bass are sharp and ensnaring. You have no choice but to dance. The rhythms grab your legs and force them to move, but you’re cool with it cause it’s just that damn funky.
On remix duties, previous Feral One artist TKO takes “Smile & Wave” in a more consistent direction. The invitation isn’t to heaven with this version, more to an earthbound dance party, but one that is so obscure and underground that everyone who gets the invite is sure to maintain the vibes.
It’s a deep, refined piece of music that follows a beginning, middle, and end structure exactly the way a great party does. The opening is intriguing and enticing, using subtlety as a motivator to continue following the flow of the music.
At its highest point, foundational elements are manipulated and extended into something that feels entirely new but familiar at the same time, and as the track closes the senses are released from the hypnotism while components slowly fade away, leaving behind only that warm feeling inside that's enhanced by the early morning sun and the memories to go with it.
