The Order of the Templars, also known as the Knights Templar or Order of the Temple of Solomon, existed for almost two centuries during the Middle Ages.  Its history began around the year 1129, it was one of the most powerful Catholic military monastic orders of the Middle Ages.  The Templars were born in the 12th century with the purpose of protecting pilgrims visiting the Holy Land.  They were skilled fighters during the Crusades and were well equipped for finances.  The Templars were also great builders of fortifications in Europe and the Holy Land.  In 1307 the French king Philip IV, fed up with the economic dependence he had on the order due to the large sum of money he owed, decided to put an end to them.  He met with Pope Clement V to issue a papal bull ordering all Christian kings of Europe to arrest all Knights Templar.  It was not long before the vast majority of the Templars were arrested, tortured and burned at the stake, accused of heresy and sacrilege.  In 1314, Jacques de Molay, the last grand master, was arrested.  De Molay did not submit to King Philip IV and Pope Clement V, pressured by the French monarch, dissolved the order.  Jacques De Molay was tortured for days accused of sacrilege and heresy.  Although he initially pleaded guilty, he later publicly recanted, declaring his innocence and that of his brothers in the Order.  In 1314, Jacques De Molay, last Grand Master of the Knights Templar, was burned alive in front of Notre Dame Cathedral.  Before being burned on the pyre, De Molay cursed King Philip IV of France, his descendants, Pope Clement V, and all those who conspired against the Knights Templar.  De Molay summoned Clement V and Philip IV before the Court of God in one year.  He also said that Philip IV's line of succession would no longer reign in France.  Pope Clement V died on (April 20, 1314) and Philip IV died on (November 29, 1314) and his royal advisor William of Nogaret was poisoned that same year.  Between 1314 and 1328 three children and grandchildren of the French king died.  Fourteen years after Molay's death, the Capetian dynasty no longer existed, after 300 years.  God gave justice to his faithful soldiers.  In June 2011, Pope Benedict XVI apologized for De Molay's murder and acknowledged that he was the victim of false accusations.  Centuries after the tragedy, the Vatican admitted that Pope Clement V had supported the murders, although the Templars were not guilty.
