We welcome Ed Longo and his studio project The Applied Arts Ensemble debut on Early Sounds with “The Other Fantasy”, the result of many recording sessions that took place in different places around Europe with an array of musicians from a predominantly jazz background.
Conceived with a strong jazz-funk, fusion and boogie approach, the record is conceptualized around the quest for Otherness in the schizophrenia of the digital age, and the resulting exotic dystopias which we are confronted with every day.

Eli Soul Clap aka Bamboozle on this track: From the area around Bologna, I was first connected with Rocca by Dimitri From Paris via their Erodiscotique project and we’ve been sharing music for a while. We finally met last year (on the same night the comp was conceived!) and he sent over a bunch of amazing music to consider for the comp. In the end the bassline on this one really stood out. FUNKY ASS HELL!

Compilation Information

Italo and Funk! A long standing relationship that stems from American R&B artists appealing to Italian audiences in the 60’s. At that time, the Italian music market was still globally influential, and you could find an artist like Wilson Pickett singing in Italian at the Sanremo Festival in 1968 (with a quite puzzling accent!). The song he performed, Un’Avventura, was written by Lucio Battisti. Battisti was the biggest Italian pop star of all time, a lover of all Black-American music, a talent whom has recently been re-discovered by global diggers alike for his psychedelic, latin, funky output in the late 70’s. But at the time, the market was ready for that real funk: in 1971 James Brown performed Sex Machine live on national TV. Then in 1973, Umbria Jazz festival opened for business bringing the likes of Weather Report and Horace Silver to the more intellectually inclined listener. Whilst at the same time, the mainstream crowd embraced the orchestral funk of masters like Piero Umiliani, Piero Piccioni and Armando Trovajoli and their soundtracks of the ‘Poliziotteschi’ B-Movies.

Colombia’s Kaputt Club returns with another sterling various artist release featuring a host of talent that showcases the best in dark disco, electronica, electro and much more. 2020 saw the Bogota based club launch their eponymous imprint with a far reaching compilation, dropping tracks from a host of artists that perfectly represent the Kaputt sound as they further cement their position as a beacon of the Colombian underground. Now they are back with ten new and exclusive cuts which transcends the club and explores the human impact on the planet, and how nature came back to reclaim their land.

Born in quarantine when nature sounded much louder than usual, VozTerra a local non-profit organization invited people to listen to nature in 'Sounds from your window'. People in Colombia and around the world took the opportunity of the isolation to listen and record ths sounds of nature. The material, together with soundscapes previously recorded in the Van der Hammen Reserve and in the La Conejera Wetland, in Bogotá, were given to DJs from the electronic music scene to create musical pieces which are now part of the ‘Reserva/Voz Terra’ compilation. The alliance of Kaputt.wav, VozTerra and the Museum for the United Nations - UN Live, is the compilation of unconventional actions that musicians and people from all over the world took to express their interest in caring for nature with the hope of inspiring people to take action to care for biodiversity and mitigate climate change.

Beyond The Struttopshere is a collaboration between Leo Strutt (Strutt Bros DJs) and Ben Chetwood (Flying Mojito Bros, Damian Lazarus’s Ancient Moons) aimed at channelling their considerable musical production experience and boundless love of cosmic dark disco. Riding on the success of their first EP, released on Gouranga in late 2020, the boys are back with a second offering on Mélopée Records. The first track, Replicants, delivers a pounding hambone bassline, bolstered by an unrelenting 303, spacey sitar stabs and a futuristic vocal sample. Celestial Drift, the second, is cosmic disco banger that draws on elements of progressive trance and driving Italo. It comes complete with nuanced percussion, a titillating arpeggiator line and an array of galactic synth melodies. Remix duties are provided by Mexican dark disco wizard, Roliva, and Mélopée stalwart, Camilo Sanjuan. Strap yourselves in for an interstellar ride Beyond The Struttosphere!

Glasgow Underground was set up in 1997 by Kevin McKay. He began the label releasing his own music and collaborations with friends and other Glasgow-based artists (Omid 16b, Studio Blue, DJ Q, Harri). Through his DJing and work for various music magazines (Muzik, Jockey Slut, Mixmag Update) he met some of his favourite producers of the time (Romanthony, Mateo & Matos, Idjut Boys...) and convinced some of them to join him releasing on GU. In the early 2000s, Kevin met Mylo and set up the Breastfed record label. The global success of "Destroy Rock & Roll" meant Glasgow Underground was put on hold. After leaving the Breastfed label in 2011, Kevin re-started Glasgow Underground and since then the label has gone on to re-invigorate Romanthony's catalogue with remixes from the likes of Dixon, MCDE, Gerd, Andres, Oliver Dollar, Ejeca, Audiojack, Claptone, Christian Nielsen, Supernova, Jimmy Edgar and Waifs & Strays. The label has also introduced producers like Daniel Trim, Brett Gould, Mia Dora and Illyus & Barrientos as well has releasing established & rising stars such as Metodi Hristov, Stefano Ritteri and Sabb.
