This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show features the collective, label, and creative agency @easternmargins, which was established five years ago by co-founders Lumi and Anthony Ko.

It began as a Lunar New Year party in London, and has evolved into one of the most prominent platforms for showcasing the sounds of the East and South-East Asian diaspora. In Lumi’s own words, it represents “music from the in-between place… from the margins.”

In 2020, Eastern Margins solidified itself as a label, releasing music from the likes of rapper ILL JAPONIA and Hong-Kong based artist QQBBG. 2021 saw the release of “Redline Legends”, a compilation featuring deconstructed club mutations from artists such as Shelhiel, Puppy Ri0t, and Jiafeng.

For this month’s episode, members Ar and Lumi have created a dynamic, high-energy mix including some early-day Eastern Margins classics, as well as a few tracks from nascent producers and pop-trance remixes. Eastern Margins will also be continuing its Road 2 Redline tour this fall, supported by Carhartt WIP. More info to come soon. Carhartt WIP Radio September 2023: Eastern Margins

This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show welcomes the Paris-born, Tokyo-raised DJ, producer, label founder, and sound designer @alexfromtokyo.

Living in Japan for 25 years during the 80s and 90s, he had an ear to the ground for Tokyo’s thriving electronic and dance music scenes. He worked as a DJ, promoter, translator, and coordinator between Japan and the rest of the world, before launching his own label in 2002, titled world famous. 

This fall, Alex From Tokyo will be releasing Japan Vibrations Vol. 1, a compilation which in his own words, sounds like “the heartbeat of Tokyo: electric, eclectic, and always surprising.”

Carhartt WIP Radio October 2023: Japan Vibrations

This month Carhartt WIP radio features renowned radio host, label founder, and record curator Michael Kucyk from Melbourne, Australia. Kucyk rose to prominence in 2005 via independent Melbourne radio station 3rrr.fm, where he debuted his show Noise In My Head. The show later moved to NTS Radio, before evolving 2015 into what is now the @efficientspace, a reissue label committed to releasing rare and obscure music from Australia, covering everything from post-punk to folk and avant-pop.
 
The mix that Kucyk created for this month’s episode reflects the label’s wide and diverse catalog, featuring early influential releases, album closers, and often-overlooked gems. Carhartt WIP Radio November 2023: Efficient Space

For the last Carhartt WIP Radio show of 2023, we’re placing a spotlight on the beloved London-based, globally-renowned music platform NTS Radio and their record homonymous label, launched in 2019.

No strangers to the airwaves, the hosts of this month’s show are NTS residents Flo Dill of The Breakfast Show, and Samuel Strang, NTS's head of music and host behind the SNZ show. During the episode, the duo weave Brazilian funk, dungeon synth, and Amapiano into discussions surrounding the importance of the label in today’s music landscape, NTS’ varied musical output, and the processes behind making its upcoming compilations.

Carhartt WIP Radio December 2023: NTS Label Profile

For the first Carhartt WIP Radio show of 2024, we’re focusing on the Dresden-based independent record label @uncanny-valley-dresden.
 
Launched by four friends as a way of platforming music by close peers and collaborators, the label released its first record in 2010 – a dynamic house-driven compilation featuring Jacob Korn, Cuthead, Thomas Fröhlich, and Break SL. 
 
Almost fifteen years later, Uncanny Valley has grown into an international, multidisciplinary effort, collaborating with artists and musicians alike from Brooklyn, Berlin, and New York City. And with the addition of sub-labels Rat Life and shtum, its sound has remained just as diverse, spanning house, hip-hop, acid, and synth-wave.
 
For this month’s episode, Uncanny Valley created a mix which delves into its eclectic back catalog, highlighting favorite tracks alongside some hidden gems. Expect a journey through jazz-funk, hip hop, ambient, Italo and techno.

Carhartt WIP Radio January 2024: Uncanny Valley

This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show explores the soundtrack of PRECIOUS, our latest skate film directed by Paris-based filmmaker Joaquim Bayle.

The score is a journey through LA rap by BONES, New York hardcore by Show Me the Body, and avant-garde folk from Dali Muru & The Polyphonic Swarm.

In need of sleep

This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show places a spotlight on Rotterdam and the influential record label, store and distributor @clone-nl.

Founded by @sergeclone, Clone launched in 1992 with the EP “Coördinated Sounds & Sequences," under Serge’s moniker Orx. 

What began as a platform for Serge’s own music and his friends’ has grown into a worldwide operation, with Clone’s current roster of artists including Finland’s Aleksi Perälä, Germany’s Roman Flügel, and Legowelt from The Netherlands, as well as Detroit’s Drexciya, The Other People Place, and Der Zyklus. Under Clone Records are also several sub labels including  Basement Series, Royal Oak, and Clone Jack for Daze.

In 1995, Serge launched Clone the record store, as well as its distribution arm, which specializes in electronic music, original soundtracks, jazz, funk, and Italo disco from a variety of international labels. 

For this episode of Carhartt WIP Radio, Serge offers an insight into Clone with a mix featuring tracks from its most recent catalog, while paying tribute to the birthplace of techno – Detroit.

This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show features the New York-based producer, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist @keiyaa. 

Born and raised on Chicago’s South Side, keiyaA grew up singing in the Chicago Children's Choir, before studying the alto saxophone. Today, she combines her jazz training with stirring vocals and neo-soul sensibilities to create richly textured, yet introspective music. Her sound touches r&b, hip hop, and jazz, while also venturing into IDM, ambient, and experimental realms. 

For this episode of Carhartt WIP Radio, keiyaA has created a mix that features unreleased music, remixes and collaborative works, creating a deep, spiritual flow of experimental grooves, bouncy bass lines, and fourth-world rhythms, all combined with her signature mix of song, rap, spoken word.
