If you've never been to a cattle auction, I highly recommend it. Cattle are escorted into a presentation pen in front of an audience and the auctioneer begins his babbling with increasing intensity trying to get the crowd excited and worked up to raise the bids higher. But despite the excitement beating from dry P.A. speaker cones- the crowd sits stoic like monks.

Speaking in tougues

I once ran into the center of a dust devil to see what it was like. The wind whipped my hair around and little pebbles and sand swirled around me lightly sand blasting my bare arms. It quickly dissipated and I was left recalling a story I heard on the radio from a survivor of the dust bowl. They had lived in south eastern Colorado where the land is still sterile. She described being caught in the dust storm while making their way from a neighbors farm to her own. She described clinging on to her mom's long skirt while they shielded their eyes and covered their mouths with fabric. She said because of the static electricity created by the swirling dust that the barbed wire fence they were following home glowed blue in the darkness.

I spent the day in Chapultepec Park. The sun was hot, but there was shade under the trees. The air smelled of spring and roasted corn. It was noon and the “Danza de los Voladores” had started. The men circled the pole, stamping their feet as they circled the tower that was like the trunk of a tall tree. One played a flute with a small tight drum attached to it. The tune was thin and high. It carried and mixed with the sounds of dogs barking.

The wind came up. It knocked over the table where the performers sold souvenir hummingbird amulets. Small clay hummingbirds spilled across the dirt. The tourists rushed to gather them and fix the table. 
I watched from beneath a tree. The men climbed the pole one by one. They pulled their ropes as they went. The flute player was last. He perched on top, small against the sky. They turned the  platform with their feet winding up the long lengths of rope attached to each flyer.

They fell in wide circles, the ropes unwinding and spinning them down. The air took them as they made slow shapes with their arms and legs, sometimes like the number "4" upside down. The ropes unwound. Each turn brought them closer to the ground, slowly with the creaking of the spinning platform above where the flute player continued tapping his drum and whistling.
Then the screeches came. It was a horrible sound. Like pain or madness. I thought it was a homeless person, some lost soul in the park. But later, I saw the vendors. They blew into small clay whistles cradled in their palms. Aztec death whistles. The screech was like a wild jungle cat or a hysterical woman.

It is spring. The jacaranda trees are blooming. The blossoms are purple, littering the paths and sidewalks everywhere like purple confetti. Hummingbirds moved through them. They were small and bright. They hovered, then darted away. I was told they are a symbol of Mexico City.

I visited the beach last week, hoping to find a small plant like the one I brought back from the coast of Monterey years ago. That one finally died after being placed in a dark corner. I guess that kind of plant does not grow in Southern California. However, I had spent a time looking at anemones in the tidal pools and recorded the sound of the water flowing in and out of them on my phone. 
The pools are at the base of a high cliff, far above there are a few trees that cling to the edge of the cliff and succulents cascade down. At the base and around some large rocks is a small, shallow cave. As the sun set to my right, I sat there wondering if the rising tide would trap me there in that little cave, or would I be able to scramble up the large rocks with my boots on. I escaped, they are good boots.

Binaural Cenote

I got the nickname "Glitch" from  co-workers when I was working at a mine up in the mountains north of Breckinridge. When it's cold we would work out side or driving tractors for 45 mins and then jump in a work truck and warm up for 20 minutes. One day I left my phone paired with the stereo in the work truck. I was operating an excavator near by when some of the guys jumped in the truck to warm up. When they cranked the truck on- my phone paired and Apex Twin or Autechre came on over the stereo. I had to try to explain what I referred to as "glitch music"- so, being a bunch of hicks, they called me Glitch from that point forward. I'm using this account to motivate me to finish tracks and get better at producing my music. I travel all over North America for work and take machines with me so I can occupy myself in my motel room instead of hanging out in bars. I used to name each track after the city I was in when I began the track. Now that I'm finishing tracks- the character of each track is more developed I think. I would very much appreciate any feedback on my music as I don't share it with anyone I know. Thank you.
