W I N T E R P L A N E T - I N T R O D U C T I O N

Winterplanet is an intimate acoustic excursion into solitude, tranquility,remoteness and melancholy. Even though I do not think these moods are inherently or exclusively ‘Nordic’, they do resonate strongly in these subarctic conditions. For example, the drastic changes in the amount of daylight from season to season affects people both emotionally and physically. It influences how colours are perceived and even how sounds become soft and intimate amidst the large snow drifts.

My personal experience with total silence, enclosing twilight and timelessness date back to the many weekends spent in my parents’ cottage during the mid and late 1980’s. As a young man in my early twenties, I would spend time in the quiet forest gazing at the stars as I pondered my future path. Using binoculars or a telescope to peer into the crystal clear Northern sky, I had a strong sense of being surrounded by the cosmos. Not only other planets, meteors and stars, but the earthly ecosphere itself.

The trees would snap in the -30 C degrees air as the frost bit into their branches. Moonbeams turned icy particles on the snow into glittering diamonds. The blue-grayish twilight morphed the landscape into a mysterious realm of stillness and beauty. The amazing silence and darkness of those winter nights seemed to bring the heavenly bodies closer to me, creating a profound sense of harmony with the universe in a way that is almost beyond verbal description.

I am both grateful and nostalgic when I recall my silent, personal encounters with nature and the Northern sky. Fortunately, I preserved my powerful impressions by recording many musical fragments, such as melodies, easy-going improvisations and sound experiments. Creating music and soundscapes was my way of translating and capturing my personal sensory experiences. I hope these sonic interpretations open your mind and let you experience my Winterplanet.

All tracks composed, performed and produced by Pertti Grönholm. Original tracks recorded with analogue tape recorders in Hollola, Finland in 1984-1989 by Pertti Grönholm. Remixed with some additional instruments and digitally pre-mastered in 1997-2003 by Pertti Grönholm at Valimo Productions Turku, Finland. Mastering by Fredrik Lindeman at Lydmuren, Oslo. Olefonken is a man of few tracks and even fewer words. But when something comes out it is solid, envisioned, and full of love. Raised in Africa his sound has a warm funky rhythmic quality to it, but since growing up in Norway it also contains fresh, cold and sometimes melancholic melodies.
