Newcastle dream pop outfit Seeing Hands have announced the upcoming release of their debut single ‘I Knew You’. Recorded in their hometown, the track is the first in a series of releases planned over the next twelve months and sparks immediate comparisons to the likes of The War On Drugs and Wild Nothing.

Comprising of Kev Curran (vocals, guitar), Nick Hodgson (lead guitar), Jon Varty (bass) and Liam Guillan (drums), the quartet’s jangly guitars and dreamy vocals have already earned them airplay on Radio X and their profile is sure to be enhanced further following this first single release.

Produced by Jack Boyle and John Elliott (Loft Studios, Newcastle), Seeing Hands’ ‘I Knew You’ is released on 5th August and will be available to purchase on iTunes and Spotify.

Really Mean It

After releasing two strong albums within a mere 11 months, the DeSoto Caucus has taken their time completing this upcoming release. ”4” is an album marking a change in the band's modus operandi; after consistent touring and shows everywhere from humble Reeperbahn bars to imposing concert halls, the former musical collective has steadily become more of a tight knit gang of four. Having picked up a great deal of dexterity in handling musical curve balls through years of touring and recording as Howe Gelb's Giant Sand, the intuitive way of playing is ever present. Along with still more personally engaged songwriting, the sound of the band is significant, intriguing and utterly unique.

There's still the solid, liquid grooves made up of Peter Dombernowsky's rolling beats and dry percussion, perfectly matched by the rock steady flexibility of bass player Henrik Poulsen, the boiling organ, pensive piano and twang guitar of Nikolaj Heyman with the signature dual lead vocals he shares with main songwriter Anders Pedersen. At the same time, though, fans of the band will recognize new flavors not only in the fat sounds oozing from the album, but also in the expanded collaborative efforts of Heyman and Pedersen on stories of frailty, detachment and rupture.

For recording the band relocated to Heyman's north country studio in a former horse stable turned Big Pink, and isolated themselves, jamming and trying new approaches. The artistic benefits of being without cell phone signal and wifi are obvious, but during the winter the remoteness also meant having to deal with frozen pipes, and melting snow for the morning brew.

Two and a half years down the road, the foursomes' fourth album is proof that the process, focused on gaining new territory while never abandoning your trademarks, was worth the wait. So join the DeSoto Caucus' continued journeys under the wide open sky, down red dirt roads, into towns without names, and into the hearts of people out of touch and out of time. 
Not unlike the DeSoto Caucus itself, timeless as their take on contemporary independent rock is. Four brothers in arms. Four musketeers. Embarking on yet another sonic voyage.

Having released their latest album, FLOTUS, in November to critical acclaim including 'Albums of the Year' mentions in publications such as MOJO, Uncut, The Guardian and The Times; Lambchop is a Band have shared their cover of Prince's iconic 'When You Were Mine', recorded by the band's new live line up featuring Wye Oak's Andy Stack.

The track continues Kurt Wagner's exploration of R&B themes on FLOTUS with an underpinning current of subtle echoes and flourishing piano lines. The many moving parts are tied together by Wagner's skewed and distorted vocals to create a beautiful and intriguing take on the much covered track that stands it in a realm of its own.

Dirtmusic return for their fifth album, a full-scale collaboration with Turkish-psych visionary Murat Ertel from Baba Zula. Recorded in Istanbul, the album navigates hypnotic rhythms, cinematic atmospheres and dark political realities.

The striking figure of Murat Ertel is standing at the door of his home studio, a converted mechanic’s garage in a suburb of Istanbul. The Turkish capital is a tense and conflicted place these days, but Baba Zula’s leader and saz man is on fine form. Before him stand those current and former musical nomads, Chris Eckman and Hugo Race, guitars in hand. Dirtmusic are about to take on their latest, and perhaps most thrilling, form.

But let’s rewind a little, for Dirtmusic’s story is worth your time (although it perhaps makes more sense to talk about Dirtmusics plural).

Originally a straight-talking, mainly acoustic trio mining blues and country for 21st century gold, the band’s first happy accident was to stumble upon Tamikrest at the fabled Festival au Désert in Timbuktu in 2008. A musical love story began, running through that joyous first collaboration with Tamikrest in BKO (2010), followed by Troubles (2013) and Lion City (2014), which expanded the roster to include Ben Zabo, Samba Touré and a host of other superb Malian musicians. In the meantime, however, the Islamist takeover of Northern Mali in 2012 had darkened the sound and the songwriting, giving them a tone that continues to resonate through the new record.

Back to that garage. True to form, Eckman and Race look to improvise, for that line to the Bamako years is still strong. They’ve come with a couple of beats and loops – and they’re not even sure whether they will attach any words to this year’s Dirtmusic. But Ertel knows they need to tell a story. The time and the place demand it. This is being recorded in Istanbul after all, and Eckman has flown there from Slovenia, a country that has secured its southern border with razor wire – and Race from Australia, where sea-borne refugees are detained indefinitely on remote islands. And so it goes, a tale of borders and walls, of cold fronts and cold hearts.

‘We need a story,’ said Murat. This year’s Dirtmusic summit has given us another one to think about and, as importantly, to dance to. The desert tent has been swapped for the garage in Northern Istanbul, for now, but the concerns remain the same: to tear down borders, real and imagined, as quickly as they can be thrown up. Ten years in, this singular band with a plural soul have made their finest record yet.
