Recording made at Oak Lake Field Station outside of Brookings, South Dakota at approximately 6:30 AM. M/S setup with Sennheiser MKH 30 + MKH 40.  Due to a broken tripod, the microphone blimp was balanced in the branches of a small tree.

This track is only 30 seconds, in part because CONTACT MICS CAN STILL PICK UP YOUR DARN VOICE, AND I TALK WAY TOO MUCH. Oh how i like to talk...

Penguin Party

It is getting to be that time of year again when Thunder returns from its winter hibernation to warn us of rain, make us feel small, and scare our children. This past week I heard my first first thunder rumble of the warm spring and summer months. The first crackle caught me off guard and actually gave me a physical shake. These vibrations reminded me of the luscious growls and celestial purrs that are coming our way, but also of last year, when me and Dante were deep in Nebraska's Sandhill country, staying up in the The Nature Conservancy's Niobrara property. This recording was an excerpt from one of the storms we weathered during our stay. It wasn't the fiercest storm we heard there, but the natural reverb was something pretty special. Hope you enjoy,

Thunder In The Sandhills

What voices awaken under the spotlight of fresh sun-rays. This dynamic dawn chorus, recorded on the edge of a swamp in the Miombo Woodlands, Tanzania, is the perfect soundtrack for getting energized and excited about your day. As the soundscape changes from the croaks of frogs to the trills of birds, we also wake up from our croaky, maybe groggy slumber, and spring forward into the day. 

As you come back to work, perhaps sitting at your desk, these animals, hopefully still alive and well, are preparing for another round of chorusing. The cycle begins again.
