The Group of Seven (G7) is an inter-governmental political forum, composed by the world's largest advanced economies and wealthiest liberal democracies. Recently, an idea of expanding the membership of the G7 to a Democracy Ten (D10) has been proposed. 

The first of the Global Challenges Foundation policy perspective series examines the D10 and possible developments for global governance.

D10 – A Global Coalition for Democracy in the Making?

The world is facing risks with potentially catastrophic consequences. Most recently, COVID-19 has shown the devastating effects of communicable diseases. At the same time, carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere continue to rise, a slower process than a pandemic but already causing many deaths related to extreme weather events. 

The second of the Global Challenges Foundation policy perspective series examines how learning from earlier progress can facilitate action today, both on the global environment and on other challenges.

Jens Orback, Executive Director of the Global Challenges Foundation, interviews Mats Engström, the author of the report as well as writer, journalist, and former Deputy State Secretary at the Swedish Ministry of the Environment. Learning from success stories in addressing global catastrophic risks

As the world continues to fail the COVID-19 pandemic stress test, an increasing number of important efforts are underway to strengthen global health security.

Heymann, the co-author of the report as well as professor of infectious disease epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. A new understanding of global health security: three interlocking functions

Climate change unfolds over hundreds of years because carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases sink out of the atmosphere very slowly. Investment to control climate change will bring its benefits over an equally long period, and borrowing to finance this investment will have to have a comparable term. Few national governments could borrow for such a long term. The report "A World Climate Bank", suggests a new international financial institution to underwrite this sort of debt. How could this bank operate, how can it be governed, and how could it maintain its solvency, solidity, and credibility over the required long horizon?

John Broome is Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Oxford. He is also a visiting Professor at Stanford University and an adjunct Professor at the Australian National University.

Duncan Foley is the Leo Model Professor of Economics at the New School for Social Research in New York.
