G: Helluurrr and thanks for being the first GMIX ☺ can you introduce yourselves?

 

H: Thank you so much for thinking of us! I’m Hannah, from Belfast, Northern Ireland, but recently moved to London. We linked up in Belfast at the start of April and we recorded this mix and went b2b, 1 for 1. 

S: Thanks for having us! I’m Sophie from Belfast - Ireland.   

 

G: How did you get into DJ’ing and what’s your advice for people who want to start?

 

H: Passion for music and being inspired by DJs growing up is where the seed was planted really and appreciating it as an art form and way of expression. 10 years ago when I was 20, I bought a set of Technics and started collecting records, from being involved in the scene and having mates work/Dj and networking, word got about pretty much (Belfast is a small place) and got asked to play my first gig back in 2017 and it just grew organically from there. If I’m honest, I nearly said no to that gig due to severe stage fright (which I still have lol!) and being a woman, made things seem a little more of a pipe-dream, so I never set out to be a DJ I always had seen it as a stimulating hobby. Doing it even 5+ years ago as a woman is completely different to people’s outlook on it now, which is great to see and inspiring for other women and non-binary artists. 

S: I only really started off a couple of months ago. I always wanted to get into it and have always been around people who DJ so I was lucky to always be around a set of decks. I picked a lot of what I know up by watching and practicing with my friends (s/o to Hannah)...

GMIX001

Jowy is a Dublin-based DJ with roots in Ghana, India and Surinam, born in Amsterdam. She was a participant in the Skin&Blister DJ workshops. She has been on support for artists such as Bakey, Amor Satyr, Jeff mills, Sammy Virji, Jayda g and more. Her style combines a mix of Bass heavy genres such as afro/carribean inspired riddims, Ukg, Breaks, Grime, Hard Drums, Baile funk, and more

She is the founder of foxgluv, which is a platform with the aim to create a space for all, but specifically created to highlight female, non binary, and trans creatives with a diverse range of genres and backgrounds.

G: Helluurrr and thank you for being the second GMIX! Can you introduce yourself?
JWY: Hi my name is Jowy aka JWY, I am dutch DJ based in A Dublin with ghanaian, Surinam and Indian descent. I have been djing for about 2 years.

G: I always like to ask this, how did you start DJing and how is it going?
JWY: I started DJing by accident actually. I bumped into EMA one day when I was walking down the street with my bike and we started talking about bikes. She then proceeded to tell me that she is a DJ and part of an collective called skin and blisters which is a platform to nurture and encourage female identitying, trans and non binary creatives in the realm of music and arts. They were started free DJ workshops and I told her I always wanted to learn, but assumed it was too late, so she encouraged me to keep an eye out for the workshops. I attended the 4 day workshop and never thought I would actually do any gigs, but it kind of happened and then 1 by 1 more gigs popped up.
I am very happy with how it's going, because I've gotten very lucky with being able to open for others I have been looking up to for years as well as being able to share line ups with good friends that happen to be sick DJs themselves. It's been such a a unpredictable adventure! I'm excited to see what's next.

After the GMIX002 got some traction getting mix of the day and best mixes of June on Resident Advisor, GMIX003 comes back with Ivorian French producer and DJ ---- MISFYA!!!

G: Hellur and welcome to GMIX003 thrilled to have such a sick producer on it! Can you introduce yourself?


M: Heyy, I go by MISFYA <3

Paris-born & of French-Ivorian descent~ I’m a dance music producer, DJ and visual artist based in London :), it’s such a pleasure to be a part of the GMIX series !!!

 

G: I always like to ask this, can you explain how you started DJing and started getting gigs? And what about producing?


M: I’ll start with producing, as it ties into how I got into DJing. Music has always sparked joy in me; I knew since I was 8 that I wanted to perform and be on stage! I was always either singing in my school choir and talent shows or learning choreography off of YouTube or creating my own to show my friends. If I wasn’t singing or dancing, I spent most of my time with headphones on, dissecting songs in my head and reimagining them with my own arrangement of their elements. I dabbled in Garageband, but tbh I never felt like I was able to translate what I'd composed in my head on there.

At 18, when I found a music production course at the University of Westminster, I took the leap. I wanted to have the tools that I'd been lacking to create and I knew that by learning to produce, I could still find my way to performing while having my own unique sound and ..

GMIX003

Up & coming British-Kurdish DJ Saz debuts on GMIX with a signature blend of liquescent club music. Saz is admittedly new on the scene, and in the interview we filmed together to accompany the mix release she gave a sincere and straightforward account on how despite being born and raised in London, she now has to scope a whole new scene in her own city. With her warm personality and bewitching taste in music she already landed gigs at the Roundhouse & international film festivals, as well a residency at Subtle Radio, which gave this mix a chance to be directly inspired and supported by the female DJs she got to know along the way. I met Saz in the dance, and I am so excited to bring a little piece of her to you with this fresh mix!

Life got in the way but after a little break, GMIX returns with a short + potent one from one of the artists I rep, Brooklyn based selector GILLY.
We met through one of my best friends Jordan when I went to NYC this April for a work trip with Shannen, and at the end of my stay we were both thinking about working together. Gilly gives us a short and sweet 30 minute mix featuring music from Afronaut, Hodge, James Bangura and others. It mirrors the way Gilly talks about her music: instinctive, afro-rooted, and close to her identity.
