GMJ aka Dj Gavin Martin from Melbourne Australia has been a prominent figure in the underground electronic dance music scene for near on two decades, in that time forging a successful career as Dj, event organiser and producer.

Having played all over the world at multiple electronic music festivals & club events, supporting some of the worlds leading names in underground deep house and progressive, it was a natural evolution that Gavin would bring his passion for deep

hypnotic soundscapes & grooves into the studio setting.
In 2007 the GMJ project was born, since releasing on iconic imprints including VAPOUR, PARTICLES, BAROQUE, BALKAN CONNECTION, TEMPORUM MUSIC, SYSTEM RECORDINGS, STRIPPED, OPEN & many more.
With an innate passion for spatial atmospherics & deep rhythms, the GMJ sound has been received & supported by luminary artists such as Hernan Cattaneo, Dave Seamen, John Digweed, Dousk, Eelke Klein & Kasey Taylor amongst others.

As an outward reflection of inner states, with an ear on forward thinking sonics, the GMJ project is constantly evolving into the new.

Veritable giants of the underground house scene, Kastis Torrau and Donatello are masters of their craft. With the "Genesis" EP, the duo provided a landmark moment with a stunning debut EP for Proton Music. As we now return to the twin-track offering. Two high-profile remixes UK and US producers see "Ida" transformed.

Barry Jamieson's name is writ large throughout the history of dance music. UK born but now operating from his New Jersey studio, the Grammy nominated US based producer is responsible for a plethora of projects that have shaped a generation. Responsible for mixing all of Sasha's music since 2003, Jamieson's work alongside Charlie May and Sasha himself over a number of years, saw tracks that included the era-defining "Xpander" alongside the genre-defining "Involver" albums. A studio engineer and technical visionary of global renown, regular appearances on film and TV including the ever-popular, "CSI" add further to a stellar reputation.

A hugely-respected producer and engineer under his own name and soubriquets including the celebrated, Evolution, Jamieson's work for Kyubu, Golden Wings and microCastle has been a revelation with the latter accounting for a host of high-profile remixes of DNYO, Ricky Ryan and Cid Inc. Furthermore, Jamieson's own Circular Sound Recordings has been a successful vehicle for his music as the monthly Circular Sound show on Proton Radio showcases the very best in underground club sounds that fill airwaves and dance floors. Making his very welcome debut on Proton Music, the Barry Jamieson remix of "Ida" is a deliciously evolving piece that cleverly integrates elements of the original while supplying legion additional production, not least by a smooth, rich bass line that is the perfect counterpoint to Torrau and Donatello's bass. Textured pads and a 303-tinged lead reach their zenith at the breakdown before a brash, bold beat hypnotises once more in the third and fourth movements in a work that is yet another showcase for Jamieson's ever-expanding talents.

A man very much a product of the modern dance industry, Darin Epsilon's rise to the upper echelons of the underground scene has been nothing short of meteoric. Hailing from Chicago but now firmly ensconced in the vibrant 'city of angels', Los Angeles based Epsilon has made a significant name for himself via his "Perspectives" empire. Both a hugely successful radio show with thousands of listeners and an important label with a multitude of followers and supporters, Darin Epsilon is a force to be reckoned with. Over 2 million Soundcloud plays are testament to this support as are regular DJ performances across his homeland and on a global stage alongside the likes of Cattaneo, Warren, Digweed and Sasha.

Darin Epsilon's production career is no less impressive as a host of blue chip labels play host to his music including Sudbeat, Hope, Perfecto and Black Hole. Over a century of credits can also be found on his own Perspectives digital through an array of original and remix production material as Cid Inc., Petar Dundov and Quivver have all lined up to reinterpret his work. Making a welcome debut on Proton Music, the Darin Epsilon remix of "Ida" takes the elements so central to the original, intelligently reworking them into a delicate, hypnotic offering that reinterprets Torrau and Donatello's work with immaculate precision and attention to detail. The result is a work that bristles with instantly recognisable dance floor dynamism.

Sunday morning breakfast time and we are treated to a delicious mix of funky ghetto booty tek from Kiwi chef and mix master of spices Markj under his Soundfood guise. 

Some words from the chef;
Ranch-O-Relaxo holds dear to my heart because it encompasses the core ideas of Soundfood. Good food, good tunes and good vibes in a relaxed environment.

This was my 3rd show at the Ranch. My first event was my greatest culinary challenge to date, cooking lunch for over 100 people. It was daunting but something I am very proud of. My last two shows have been brunch time sets to kick things off on the Sunday.

I always value how food provides the perfect platform for a happy audience. A perfect base to line your stomach, matched with perfect bass to line your ears. 

The team at Vision Hound have created an incredible environment that is unique to anything else I have been a part of. A big thank you to the hosts and the guests for creating such a special chapter in the history of Soundfood.

Now then, what do we have here?

E-Talking is a producer with whom you might not be familiar, at least not by name. You might well be more aware of him as one half of the French duo Nummer, a prominent pair who have released a great deal of impressive music on the likes of Butter Sessions, Going Good, Peur Bleue, Fragil Music and on their own imprint. They also boast a killer live show, one of which blew the roof off a Glasgow basement when 12th Isle hosted them many years back. 

The pair have also recently launched a new label focussing on releasing abstract electronics, experimental music and balearic abstract sounds from across the globe on an imprint called Natural Selections. 

Which brings us back to the focus of todays mix, E-Talking. One half of the outfit who has also independently released music on the likes of Whities, drawing for a slightly more hard hitting approach than perhaps anticipated. There's more to come, just you watch.

He steps up on a Friday with an intriguing mix for head and feet. Dig in.

Fresh from a series of artist-led 12"s, Om Unit's Cosmic Bridge label returns with 'Dark Matter', its first compilation since 2017's 'Cosmology Selections'. Collected in a triple vinyl LP / digital formats, the release offers a fresh snapshot of the exciting possibilities and experiments happening at the intersection of hip-hop, jungle and bass music; a hybrid sound the label has pioneered since its first release eight years ago. 

Across 14 tracks, 'Dark Matter' showcases Cosmic Bridge's growing global roster of artists: Moresounds, Danny Scrilla, Proc Fiskal, Margari's Kid, Oliver Yorke, J:Kenzo, TMSV, vromm, alongside new faces Samba and Rude Operator, and perennial favorites Es.tereo, Synkro and Djrum, the latter two in collaboration with label head Om Unit. 

Stylistically the compilation covers a broad range, and gives listeners the space to digest it all with a running time of 75 minutes. There are stripped-down, meditative rollers such as TMSV's flute-led 'Ominous', the bass hypnosis of Danny Scrilla's 'Sacred Waters', and Samba's snappy, booming remix of Om Unit's 'The Lake'. The timeless energy of jungle is channeled in Proc Fiskal's 'Death', a percussive, bouncy number, while Moresounds plays with filters (and your mind) as he refines a less-is-more take of classic themes on 'Watating'. J:Kenzo highlights the music's Jamaican roots on 'Dub For Bashenga'; a tough, pounding cut that goes straight for the chest and which finds its counterpoint in Rude Operator's 'Broken Sky'. 

For those who like more expansive, cinematic approaches there are epic waves of drums, slick editing and euphoria in Es.tereo's 'Floating Point' and Vromm's 'Decentralized', while Oliver Yorke's 'Treasured' and Margari's Kid's 'Challenger' squeeze soul from colder sound palettes and tight breakbeats. 

Om Unit's two collaborations, 'Reflections' with Synkro and 'Ruins' with Djrum, reflect the compilation's ambitions and breadth. The former is a delicate, uplifting roller that sets you up for the dark rumblings, freeform stylings and frenetic rhythms of the latter. The compilation ends with a track that arguably stands tall on its own, Crypticz's 'Chrysalis' feat. Amy Kisnorbo; an 11-minute epic that plays out like a love letter to the magic of breakbeat science, dub technology and human creativity. 

Dark Matter is a finely crafted statement of intent from Cosmic Bridge and Om Unit, shunning easy self-congratulation for a dive into the musical potentials and connections of a sound that is now an established part of the global bass music vocabulary.
