An imprint known for releasing quality material from established artists including East End Dubs and Christian Burkhardt, through to surging talents such as SOSA, Mason Collective and Wheats, Jamie Jones’ Hottrax continues to uncover new music from all corners of the house scene. Continuing their push for discovering fresh talent, December welcomes the addition of a new name as Northampton-based DJ/producer Kai Rodriguez prepares his biggest release to date with two rhythmic grooves across his ‘Undaground’ EP. 

Leading with rattling percussion, robust kicks and enticing vocal chants, ‘Undaground’ reveals an energetic opening production, while ‘POWR’ welcomes an up-front, no-nonsense production via snaking hats, distorted beats and pulsating basslines.

Producing an intoxicating blend of Afro/Latin, deep and tech house sounds, French  artist Drush teams up with Oluhle (herself no stranger to Abracadabra) for his  latest release. Having previously released on labels such as Malone’s Hurry Up  Slowly label and the Hong Kong based Calamar Records, Drush tees up the spiritual and warming single ‘Nyakalo’. 

“I produced ‘Nyakalo’ whilst I was on vacation in Spain. I love the work of Oluhle for many years and I always wanted to make a track with her, she has a great soul and  sings with a heart that I love, so I contacted her to work on the track with me. Moojo  sent the track to Viv (Abracadabra) who liked it and played it for the first time in her  Antartica mix, she contacted me straight after to tell me she wanted to sign the  track. I love her productions and the work she does on Abracadabra, so I didn’t  hesitate to accept that proposition!” 

Breaking out of the Parisian electronic music scene, Drush held his first DJ  residency in the French capital at the young age of 18. Since those formative years,  the DJ and producer has clocked up shows across Europe and beyond, fuelled by  his love of dance music and culture that began with a passion for hip hop, soon to  develop into a strong connection to electronic grooves.

Amour Propre brings us a melodic mix of afro and organic house tracks, with “Wait for me” EP. The original of this track, which gives the title to the EP, is a nice creation between afro and organic house, and enchants with the clean sweet melodies that come out quite early and give the strong character of this piece. DSF, on remix duty for this track, introduces a distinct captivating rhythm, and goes deep into the afro spirit. As the track evolves, DSF does his magic with its harmonies becoming more intense and chords leading the way. The other remixer for this great EP is Stephane Salerno, who offers yet another interesting interpretation for this piece, on the organic side. He introduces new instruments, for a deep and atmospheric experience, and a strong beat. “Mystic Tribe”, the second track of this EP starts with a strong afro rhythm which sets the tone, but it continues with mellow piano chords and an alluring vocal. Still riding high on the support for his recent Circus collab with Ki Creighton, new UK talent Kydus immediately returns to the label with a brace of new tracks that have already become proven weapons in the sets of label Yousef and the mighty Carl Cox.

His latest double-header sees him turn out more fierce grooves and raw funk with a large helping of sun-fuelled piano for good measure. Free Spirit is captivating from the first drum to the last. A rolling groove, almost house, almost techno... A poignant story told that surrounds the listener with uncompromising positive energy, a huge summer moment if there ever was one. Yousef has been nurturing the demo for almost six months, building it from a secret weapon to Circus anthem.

Cala el Verano see’s Kydus share the load as he continues the house techno hybrid, yet with a lighter touch from the musicianship of Naples born Dj Dep. While the signature chunky groove of the UK producer remain the focus, it’s the additional top line that energises the collaboration with a touch of hedonistic freedom. A real gem.
