For an artist with little social media presence, Italian drum & bass maestro Goh has been using his music to build a formidable reputation, one which is now being given a platform by the foundations of Red Light Records. Set up in 2003 by Cause4Concern’s Optiv, a collective who have helped pave the way for many emerging talents drawn from the bass world’s gloomiest undercurrents, it stands as an embodiment of what Goh represents. That’s why he was welcomed into their fold; Red Light’s roster has an impenetrable production standard and boasts a wealth of talent, one which Goh fits within perfectly.

Although drum & bass isn’t the only world which Goh has built his craft over the entirety of his career - as well as working within film scoring and cross-genre productions, his influences span throughout an array of different soundscapes. However drum & bass is where he’s found his home, which is obvious through his previous cuts on Mindtech, the pivotal Let it Roll EPs and Close 2 Death Recordings. 
The first of two tracks, ‘Propagation’ rolls through on an epic intro, one which paves layer on top of layer until you’re drawn into clashing metallics, under laid by thumping drum progressions. ‘Propagation’ bites between each section and has slices of cutting percussion which punch through the practised composing which has made Goh such a sought after producer over recent months.

Then on the flipside, you’re pulled ‘To the Core’, with the same ferocity as its forerunner; however it oozes more of a slick, dancefloor edge. Whilst ‘Propagation’ focuses heavily on its thumping juxtaposition of elements, ‘To the Core’ aims to get bodies moving within a club space. The throbbing bassline zips through the mix and you become instantly aware why Goh is becoming a name within his own right, without the need for cyberspace hype. Each side shows a different part of Goh’s versatility and it’s a diversity which throws itself at you on first listen. It’s time to once again be pulled into the world of Red Light, one held up by music of an intimidating quality.

For the 29th release, the spanish trio, Maniatics, is back on Kosenprod!

The beginning of 2017 saw an unstoppable momentum grow for Kosen Productions. The Toulouse based record label has continued to grow since its inception, becoming a pivotal part of the drum & bass underground with every successive release. And alongside their heavyweight roster, which has seen them expand throughout every sound crevasse the genre offers, they have marked France as an epicentre for its growing reach.

Coming next from the imprint is Maniatics’ ‘Fight the Might’ EP, providing three brand new, dangerously fashioned cuts which will become staples within sets throughout festival season. The Spanish trio have pushed their growling, monstrous sonic weapons into hard-hitting DJ sets across Europe and beyond; a relatively new production outfit, they’ve rode a meteoric ascent into the limelight since their first release. This forthcoming EP will see them pushed even further onto their pedestal, moving their success to new heights.

Title-track ‘Fight the Might’ begins with eerie, blaring atmospherics, before slowly beginning to build until a full blown assault is unleashed onto the aural synapses. Distorted, grating snare winds up underneath the mix, before snipped up vocal sample slices through the growling composition. On first listen, you’re made acutely aware of what Maniatics are all about. Each chiselled groove slices through with more impact than the last and you’re left to bask in its ferocity. ‘Pressure’ follows in a similar fashion, despite being a more gradual build - one which becomes overwhelming before its seismic implosion. With rattling hi-hats and a brooding bassline beginning to weave itself through each carefully constructed layer, Maniatics once again go in for the kill with each meticulous breakdown. The trio deliver blow after blow of crushing force.

And finally comes ‘Teenagers’, drawing forward on a more melodic vibe but still devastating in its impact. Winding between elevating synths and clattering drum patterns, the track suddenly detonates, with a hip-hop sample leading the charge. Doing what they do best, Maniatics create a skipping, firing set of beats, apt for the dancefloor yet still leaving destruction in their wake. From start to finish, the EP continues its assault and its one which leaves a lasting impression on its listener.

‘All Is Lost’ starts the set with the perfect balance of emotional sonic star-gazing and gritty bottom-end welly. With stunning hymn-like vocals from Thomas Oliver and hype-hungry attitude from Youthstar, it’s widely regarded as one of the album’s boldest highlights. Naturally both Memtrix and Telekinesis have stepped up to the massive challenge. 

Lifted fave Memtrix goes first. Opening with teases of the original’s euphoric synths, he lets the vocals breath for one second before BANG: utter bassline sickness takes over. Complete sonic bombardment of the senses, there is no mistaking Memtrix’s direction and focus for this prime-time piece of D&B naughtiness. And there’s no mistaking the raw power of Telekinesis’s remix, either… Igniting with piano-primed ‘lighters up’ intro, we’re soon pushed into the deepest end of the darkness pool with Youthstar’s spitfire delivery, a gut-busting halfstep groove and a murder of distorted bass tones. Flipping to full D&B tempo midway, it’s a strident party piece that will stay in your wallet or playlist from now until the 23rd century.  

Next up, ‘Dawn Of A Dark Day’: A blazing unity of UK grime and Euro neuro, the day Black Sun Empire called up the Foreign Beggars for mic-duties was a game-changing day for the entire bass industry. Naturally both remixes pay respect to the fusion and fire of the original. Prolix takes the original’s swaggering halfstep intro and adds a touch more menace on the low-end and an industrial punch to the beats before dropping into a rampant, rolling speaker-smasher. No face will be left unmelted when you drop this. We guarantee it. Meanwhile Receptor adds his own interpretation with an instant uptempo kickstart and the creative use of drama-drenched cinematic strings and devilish Slayer-level guitars.  

‘Killing The Light’ brings us to a fitting climax with two of drum & bass most distinctive, forward-thinking acts on remix duties. Delicately dressed with the heart-melting vocals of Inne Eysermans, the raw emotion makes ‘Killing The Light’ the closest thing to a ballad Black Sun Empire will ever write. Paying respect to this, Icicle sharpens the kicks and snares, weaves haunting pads into the mix and takes the vocal to the darkest place imaginable. For those looking for more of a laser-snapping edge, look no further than June Miller’s remix; bolstered with a gargantuan bassline and searing sonic flares, the Dutch-Anglo duo have taken the softness and depth of the original and subverted into a priceless peaktime banger that NO D&B DJ should be without this season.
