In arabic 'al shaab' means 'the people' and shaabi translates to folk or popular music. The term has been used for decades but, in recent years a new generation of producers, rappers and singers have revolutionized the style.. On the one hand there are the samples of traditional egyptian instruments, the hypnotic rhythms of the religious festivals and wedding parties (mulids and mahraganat) and the songs of lament (mawal). On the other hand, the influence of global dance music from hip-hop to reggaeton to electro pop and house music are all present although in this mix i chose to focus on tracks that have a predominantly egyptian flavor.. For the most part, these songs are self produced in tiny back room studios with cracked music software programs and after years of development, these guys are finally starting to get their due.. Birthdays are always a moment of deep introspection for me. Since I'm turning 30, I'm reflecting a lot on the past decade that went by so fast. 

I feel incredibly lucky for everything that happened to me over those past 10 years. It was filled with love, friends, travels, adventures and intellectual challenges. And of course music.

Here is a selection of deep groove that made me really happy this year. We've had a crazy cold winter in New York. But even in the worst days, I would play some of those to teleport myself to a remote beach. 

To the next decade of groove!

Schmeckefuchs & Monolink im Tal - IV. Advent - #028

Sunday morning, the most beautiful sunrise, after almost a whole week in the desert. It was been the coldest night so far, I remember setting up my gear, nervously hoping it wouldn’t let me down, when the sound-technician came up to me and said, "We might have a problem, there’s a storm coming!“. I turned around and saw a huge dark wall of sand reaching up to the sky, rolling into our direction.
I started playing anyways, and somehow the storm merged together with the lyrics of my songs, and changed their meaning. It had been the roughest condition I ever played in, and it really was a special one. Thank you for that experience!

ART:

The Chapel of Dancing Shadows is a space of contemplation, meditation, wonder. It is a communal space serving as art gallery, refuge, and sound bath. The 8-ft walls are covered in delicate drawings— the first 12 images of a developing 150-plate series of works composing Maria Kreyn’s Codex, an allusion to an invented creation myth. The ceiling is an elaborate CNC cut structure, creating the feeling of an arabesque lace canopy. From it hang detailed rafters and a collection of wind chimes, as an ode to the sounds in the temples of Myanmar.   

"As a child, I doodled. As an adult, the images have evolved into a complex universe in their own right-- a surreal, yet classically inspired world of fantasy, illusion, spatial bending, and mythology. The images are meanderings through the labyrinths of the subconscious. They gesture at a creation myth of an invented civilization, at the beauty and aesthetic of pattern making in the human mind--both visual and literary.  As this body of work evolves, the images find new outlets, new homes, new media to participate in. Making their debut as the walls of an immersive installation (The Chapel of Dancing Shadows), they are now available to enjoy in a smaller, more intimate print form, closer to their original size.”  -Maria

The Los Angeles born and bred producer discovered electronic music at 12 years old. Producing styles such as electro house, dubstep for a whil, things exploded for D!RTY AUD!O when moombahton happened two years ago. Producing tracks in that style, his music was picked up by Diplo, dirty dutch legend Sidney Samson and moombahton's own Nadastrom. In addition to writing music, D!RTY AUD!O recently founded his own label called Grindin' Records to release his favorite tunes on.

Kasheme is definitely one of those performances I look forward to every year. Mostly because they allow me to play absolutely anything i see fit.

This Zurich based family started me out in their apartment living room 3 years ago with only a handful of people joining me for the journey. This year I joined them in their new location; a bar/cafe/record store. 

Once again, only an intimate group of people were able to join us. As we were all sat, or laying on comfortable couches and pillows, silence took the room and we began to share a very special night together. 

Myself, being a fan of diverse music from many genres, decades, and countries, I am always honored to share that other side of my collection with an open minded audience.

I sincerely hope you enjoy this selection of music which is a very small portion of what I listen to on my day to day.
