When mulling which direction to go in for RA's 1000th mix celebrations, many options came to mind. Some shadowy character 2-stepping around the fringe of our collective consciousness? An impossible-level IDM icon?

All tempting. But, ultimately, we are a DJ-forward publication and this is a DJ mix series. It felt truer to the history of the RA Podcast to release deep vault material from a time when the world of niche records felt different, tighter, more discrete.

The fourth-longest mix in the series' history is an unrepeatable masterclass, recorded in 2012 at a superclub that no longer exists. (2012, incidentally, is farther away from 2025 than 2012 was from 2000, and if we have to clock it, so do you.)

It's the coming together of one British icon who passed away in 2020, and another whose time on the road has scaled back considerably as of late. DJ Harvey agreed to exactly one b2b set in his life: this one, with Andrew Weatherall.

The night took place at Trouw, an Amsterdam club already considered legendary before it shuttered its doors in the opening hours of 2015, as part of an RA series anchored around rare combinations playing start-to-finish. Harvey was at the peak of an irresistible career second act, which dovetailed with a disco revival that dominated clubs for years. Weatherall, with infinite brownie points stockpiled from the '90s, remained everyone's favourite debonair psychonaut. 

What follows is a 385-minute marathon of arpeggiated chug and slow-cresting climaxes: a moment when the resting heart rate of dance floors plunged lower than any comparable point in the 21st century. 

If you've got time to spare, a fun side game is sussing out who plays what. Disco-dub covers of Echo & the Bunnymen? Smart money's on Weatherall. Exuberant EQ'ing of The Isley Brothers? Gotta be Harvey. As for the low 'n slow, lightly spangled house that was all the rage in the early 2010s (think Maxxi Soundsystem, Disco Bloodbath, Rub & Tug, C.O.M.B.I. and Full Pupp), it's anyone's guess. 127 BPM practically feels like an F1 car.

When we kicked off our RA.1000 campaign, we outlined a few full-send goals: tick off long-awaited dream guests, honour architects who shaped the world around us and deliver recordings you truly can't hear anywhere else.

DJing and the mythmaking around it has undergone a quantum leap since 2012, let alone 2006, 1996 or 1989. For those of us who were kicking around in the former, there's a creeping melancholy that our prime is fast becoming a matter of historical record. The killing moon really did come too soon. 

Where will electronic music, DJ sets or any of this be in 2044? Hard to say. Best not to overthink that one. Instead, we want to say thanks to all contributors on the series so far. Anyone who spent the best years through the 90s into the early oughties in San Francisco, and the last decade in the LA underground knows the name TK is synonymous with inimitable dance floor-rocking expertise of the highest caliber. 

Whether solo in his former extended guise as TK Disko, in collaborative formations as Split Secs along with his label Machine Limited co-founder SONNS, or readying the world for retrofuturist rave rockers as Warehouse Preservation Society with DJ Tavish, 1/3 of Second Language with Pacific Horizons, or as founding member of notorious DJ and production collective 40 Thieves, quality comes first and foremost - along with ensuring everyone sweating under the mirror ball is having a damn good time.

TK cut his teeth as a mainstay of legendary SF venues such as The Trocadero Transfer, DV8, Bulletproof, Sunset and King Street Garage. He’s one of the few local SF DJs invited to guest at the legendary Wicked nights and was picked by DJ Harvey as the resident warm up for his running Rx night. Drawing on a deep knowledge of music history as a selector in the classic sense, TK effortlessly traverses many styles, eras, and continents, mixing in new and old, making both sound fresh and relevant, with sonic excitement guaranteed. In addition to playing alongside some the greatest names in the field from Jeff Mills, Tony Humphries and Pal Joey to Idjut Boys, Optimo and beyond, TK clocks late hours in the studio concocting fresh forward-thinking sounds for the future, as only a bona fide veteran with a deeply-rooted past like he can.

Gold Code aka Raf Zevallos-Crowe, is a DJ/producer based in Orange County, California. A lifelong music lover, collector, and DJ, Raf's eclectic sets run the gamut of dance music with a base in-house and techno.

Growing up in 1980s Los Angeles, he was initially inspired by radio mix shows and DJs such as Doc Martin, Rob One, Michael "Mixxin" Moore, and 1580 KDAY Mixmasters. Moving to San Francisco in 1992, he immersed himself in its underground scene. Attending parties lead to working them and eventually to djing. He played his first warehouse in 1996 and spent the next 10 years djing and producing some of San Francisco’s most infamous parties and club nights.

"Gold Code" was initially founded as a music blog in 2007. The site showcased past, present, and future classics as well as his personal edits and DJ mixes. 

In 2009, he focused his efforts on music production and a live show. He adopted "Gold Code" as his moniker and debuted a well-received live set at the celebrated “As You Like It” parties. Remixes soon followed for Nude Photo Music and SubSensory labels culminating with his debut release, "The Day After" with remixes by Audioelectronic, Basskittens, Chris Fierenze, and Jonah Sharp.

2015 brought a move back to Southern California and a radio show, OMAKASE. Currently broadcasting live on Sunday from 6-8 pm [Pacific] on KUCI 88.9 FM, and livestreaming on www.twitch.tv/omakaseshow, showcasing the art of mixing past, present, and future classics.
