Started DJing in 94 at 18 after being able 2 acquire a month old pair of 1210 mk2’s from a very reluctant mate who was being forced 2 sell them because they had 2 leave England and get 2 Venezuela as quickly as possible 4 family reasons, leaving me with a basically new pair of decks 4 the princely sum of £500 4 the lot , decks , carts, mixer.  After being at a friends house after being ejected from another house when parents prematurely returned 2 find the house filled like a club I was privileged 2 b able 2 experience something that had a profound and inspirational effect on me, after leaving the 1st house a smaller intimate group of friends ended up in a front room that had seen many after club messiness and intimate parties. The DJ that had 2 rapidly grab his gear & had come back 2 the house and then proceeded 2 play a wicked set that literally took over your consciousness and then took u on a journey through a different reality. Being the early nineties it was quite possibly aided by something that went  hand in hand with the whole scene. But regardless the DJ played a set that was the catalyst that caused me 2 b determined 2 get a set of decks and then play at parties and hopefully make someone’s night a night they would be touched by. Before I explain who, I should say I was actually able to beat mix but beyond that hadn’t a clue how 2 make different tracks blend into a seamless flowing set. Buti was extremely lucky. At the age of 16 I was actually associating with a group of friends that were 10 years my senior but it allowed me 2 meet a lot of cool people and go 2 clubs and hanging out with people who were fun 2 go out with due 2  their age and experience and circles they all moved in. So going back 2 that life changing night. Check him out. But not only did he set the ball in motion after struggling to make a mix that worked I asked him for some advice. But he did one better and invited me over for the evening and then we spent the evening in his decks room where he taught me the secret formula. It’s all mathematics. I didn’t have music lessons at school as because I didn’t have any outside tuition for a particular instrument I refused to be relegated to the section that was made up of kids with triangles, tambourines or maracas rather than actually being taught about how music is composed etc. But Dutchie patiently and even almost hid his cringes when I was actually using his decks and records,(there’s nothing more stressful than having to use someone else’s records because you don’t ever scratch your own but guaranteed you will knock the cart arm from the outer edge to the middle of the deck lol) but after explaining that music is made usually made up of bars of four beats that become sections of music that are all devisable by four in general but multiply by 2 each time 4, 8,16, 32,64 etc and then how to read the surface of the vinyl to see breaks etc. From there it was just a case of spending every spare minute learning how to mix different keys and to use the ability to make tracks blend by making sure you have stated it at the time that would allow the tracks to either blend or be able to use the breaks to make seamless changes and not having a record stop in the middle of the mix with no break or change to lose the previous track without it being as obvious and clunky as falling down  a hole.  So that’s what allowed me to get a gig. I am always grateful for the help Dutchie gave. I don’t know if he even realised that he was the person that made it all fall into place when I was really struggling. Check his stuff out.
